the coaches go with a committee at the QB/RB/WR/OL positions? I'm probably wrong but I expect Ferentz to use the Maine and FIU games to find his position players. I see Jake and Stanzi splitting time, a committee at RB (which may last to a degree throughout the season), and multiple WR packages. The switching of WR is nothing new but does bring out gripes because of the PT of one Internet star DJK.

I don't see Stanzi playing unless we are up big OR JC struggles badly and it would have to be really bad. That's more on how KF coaches rather than my expectations of JC.
But I bet we see many RB and WR throughout the year.

I'm going to predict that they split time week 1 and maybe 2. In the press Ferentz will cite it as an opportunity for Stanzi to "get his feet wet" and seem like a legit cover up to the press while the coaches get some serious evaluation. I hear what you are saying and think Ferentz would want to avoid a press/fan QB controversy but if Stanzi looks sharp even in mop up duty the fans will be all over it.

I just don't see them splitting that much time. KF is loyal, almost to a fault, and he will let JC play majority of the downs unless he plays even worse.
Maybe JC can get hurt like Tate in the Solon Beef Days Hay Bale Toss........ :p

do you have any access to Iowa's YAC for last year? It had to be the worst in CFB.

I will look around tomorrow while at work. We wouldn't have all of FBS, but if we do have it, it would be Big Ten only (or a couple of the BCS conferences).
College data is very limited compared to NFL.

I actually just looked at it and we don't have that.

I think Stanzi gets time against Maine. JC will probably get most of the snaps against Florida International, however, mainly because ISU is the next week. Losing to ISU again this year would be really, really, really bad.
What kind of a team is Pitt supposed to have this year?

Supposed to be decent. Top 30/40 team.

I'm not a "official" evaluator of talent (I don't think it's that hard), but I was way more impressed with Stanzi than Jake at the Spring Game.

You probably wanted it to be that way, though.

....nah, can't compete with compensation.

Not sure what you mean, but I imagine a lot of people watched the spring scrimmage hoping/expecting Stanzi to outperform Christensen. In that regard, given for many it was a predetermined conclusion, I'm not sure a valid comparison of the two can be made.

I'm definitely ok with Stanzi and JC splitting time if they have performed somewhat equal in practice. If one has outperformed the other significantly in practice, I think that QB should get more reps.

I have a somewhat negative view of Jake's ability to lead a consistent, productive offense, but I don't think that impacted my assessment of his performance in the Spring Game relative to Stanzi. I'm fully capable of being pessimistic about more than one QB at a time. and if Stanzi's admittedly very small body of work that day had warranted a conclusion that the Hawks would have an even worse chance with him out there, I think I would have been able to admit that.

Is it any different when Ferentz/O'Keefe watch Christensen? In other words, because they hope/expect Christensen to outperform the other QBs, do they see with something less than clarity?

One would *hope* that it's different.

I talked to a guy who started his fair share from last year a few days ago. He said that everything is still up in the air and that the only two guys who are locks to start are Kroul and King.

I don't buy that.

KF said this same thing right after the spring game.

I find it hard to believe that there are no "locks" elsewhere, especially on O.

It is certainly possible, but one would like to think that it's different. I'd like to think that coaches are driven less by emotion and more by evaluation. If that isn't the case, then Iowa is going to struggle for some time in many respects.

I'm not. Even if there is something interesting brewing behind the scenes, KF won't say anything of substance nor will the reporters dig deep enough to find anything.

I think Ferentz names Jake the starter but then says Stanzi has done some things well in practice and it is still a battle between Stanzi and Jake. Then he will talk about Stanzi being hurt and that setting him back a bit. Then he will talk about Maine and how good of a program they are and that they do some things on film that worries the Iowa staff. He will go on to answer the "how much will Stanzi play" by saying the staff hopes to get all the young guys a few reps. He will then mention that he hopes to get a lot of guys on the field, (avoiding the Stanzi vs. Jake argument) to evaluate and confirm some things they saw in camp. He will close with "we are still a young team and some position battles will have to play out in the preseason, er I mean out of conference schedule"
