I don't follow recruiting that much, but from what I've been hearing looks like things are becoming more of an uphill battle for Iowa again....guess that's what happens when you are below average, and your offensive and defensive style's are antiquated. Stay the course.
I believe Iowa only has two/three verbals to date...
Is Iowa recruiting going to be below average again? Seems like the Chicago area is slim picking now (ND, Illinois, Wisconsin, etc.), struggle to close the doors to the state of Iowa, Florida recruiting presense down.....looks like Iowa has resorted to competing with MAC schools for Ohio talent...

The principal thing to Iowa's benefit this year will be that the talent level in-state looks to be a little bit higher than normal.

I've heard (just people talking)....that some of the top guys are looking to leave the state, sans the OL that already verbally committed.
I'm not big into following recruiting either, but it's only July 10th. I don't remember a year under KF that the Hawks have had more than a handful of verbals at this point.
As far as the top guys looking to leave the state, I'd say the only one that leaves the state is Wegher out of Heelan. Barrent, Davis, and Cotton will be Hawks, imo.

from the 'other' board, Scheelchase and Cotton are both announcing July 16th
Cotton is looking elsewhere. whether he goes elsewhere is yet to be seen.

If Iowa loses out on Cotton, that's probably a pretty bad sign of things to come...

I disagree completely with the premise of this thread. Iowa is going to have a very good recruiting year. We will probably end up with three of the top four in state prospects in a very good year for Iowa talent (Barrent, Davis and Cotton), and the class in total looks pretty decent.

I just read that thread about Scheelhaase and Cotton. Who knows. My only basis for thinking Cotton ends up at Iowa is seeing him workout in Hawk gear at the gym I work at.

well, that was a pretty good indicator with Barrent! :)

Damn near 14 months before any of these kids even see the field for their first game (which most will watch and not play in) and the "down recruiting" threads have already started.
If the thought processes of 16- and 17-year old kids is something one should concern themselves with, then by all means be concerned on this July 10.

As I stated in another thread on here, if we get (which it looks like a more than decent shot) Barrent, Cotton, Davis and one of the two QBs (Reed or Scheelhaase), and I would be more than happy with how the class is shaping up. Throw in Wegher and it looks pretty damn good if you ask me.
It also sounds like Rogers, the big RB we already have verballed, is starting to get a lot of love recently.

I thought recruiting was looking pretty good until this week. All of a sudden, we lose Hoch and then pick up some WR that only a few MAC schools wanted.

in fairness, he did take the spot they had Stephan somethingorother slotted in. Once he didn't pan out at prep school they found a replacement. Sounds like the kid was a basketball lean until his senior season so lose a project and grab another.

He's not exactly replacing a can't miss prospect. Looks like they didn't have anyone left on the board at WR, so when the guy with the name I can't pronounce dropped off they offered this kid.

they lost that kid and the juco kid. I think his name was Paine?

I don't know about a Juco kid, although the name sounds familiar. He hadn't actually committed, had he?
I don't really follow this stuff until after they commit.

I think Payne might've even played in a game this year and then he was declared ineligible and went to a JUCO.

Paine played barely in 2008 and left due to grades and both him and Iowa have decided recently to go separate ways. I think he got in some trouble at ICC.
SL,
It's been a few years, but the elder Cotton seemed much superior to the younger one. I'm sure he's filled out, but does he look like one of the best athletes in the state? That suprises me. First I've read about it, honestly.

Oh wow. Someone's bumping posts from last year. Weird. Cotton does have a younger brother, I guess I figured that's who it was about.
