...any player from the KF era and put them on this upcoming year's team, who would pick?

My first thought would be Banks at QB or Sanders at Safety, but I am leaning towards Gallery.

I know he would be only one of the five guys on the line, but the O-Line was horrible last year and KF teams need the O-Line going in order for the offense to move down the field, no matter who is at QB.

I think that it has to be a playmaker on offense. No receivers are worthy, so it's a RB or a QB. If I'm taking a RB it's Russell, and if I'm taking a QB it's Banks. I have more confidence in our RB situation (sight unseen as it is) than I do with our QB situation, so I'm taking Banks.

Did Bashir Yamini play on the 1999 team?

If I can't choose him, I'll go with Timmy D.

Yamini was on the '99 team. You can't choose Timmy D, he pre-dates KF by a couple years.

My choice would be either Drew Tate or Ladell Betts.

Tim Dodge most certainly did play for Ferentz.

Ahh, that Timmy D.

Excellent choice.

I know it is terribly cliche and trendy, so it makes me want to go with someone else. But I think Bob Sanders is the correct choice. The cliches are true with him. If the defense steps it up, wins will still happen even with a piss poor offense. Even if those wins have to be the 6-4 variety. Ugh.

And I have to choose a not so obvious choice... how about Sean Considine? A huge part of the past few dismal seasons has been the lack of special teams creating turnovers and such. Considine was a special teams whiz. Great special teams play makes the offense look a lot better than it is by shortening the field for them.

Betts is a good choice. It's certainly a position of need.

How about a healthy Jermelle Lewis?

I'd take Russell or Betts over Lewis and his 1150 career rushing yards, personally.

On a serious note, I would probably take Gallery or David Porter. (I saw Porter because he played RT, which is what this team would need, unless I can cheat and move Gallery to RT.) Right tackle was clearly the weakest position on the offense last year, and a solid blindside protector would have made life much easier on the Great Dane.

Defensively, I'd take either Matt Stockdale or Benny Sapp. As far as I'm concerned, those two were the only above-average cornerbacks in the Ferentz era. Bradley Fletcher and whoever starts at the other spot are going to make for a long year. I can't envision a scenario where that combination is even up the MAC-level, much less Big Ten winning level.

Anyone not answering Banks, or perhaps sophomore year Drew Tate, is a retard :)

This particular season will rise or fall with the quality of QB play.

Which will be greatly affected by our offensive line.......

We gave up 46 sacks last season. I know JC could have thrown the ball away for some of them, but the o-line could have blocked someone as well.

We also averaged only 3.5 yards per carry (96th in the nation) while having two talented running backs.

Boys, I just finished watching a replay of the 2002 Purdue game on the BTN.

This confirms my selection above of Brad Banks. The guy's mobility, and overall poise, was LIGHT YEARS ahead of our current QB. There is no way, no way on this good earth, that JC could have led Iowa down the field for that winning score with 2 minutes left and no timeouts. Put him on that team as the QB, and it's an 8 - 4 type squad.

I also noticed that Joe Tiller benched Kyle Orton during that game, putting in a true freshman QB who gave Purdue a spark. You can do it, Kirk. You must do it.

Even with a dislocated shoulder?

Is Rick Stanzi the only QB on the roster other than The Anointed One?

Willford didn't bench Orton. Orton got a concussion and started calling plays from the Southeast Polk playbook. After the game, he did not even recognize his high school coach when said coach went down to visit with him.

Don't get me wrong - I have a healthy dose of skepticism about JC. But I also think he has the potential to be much better than expected too. Some guys can come in and do great right away. But I'd say most don't. I'm willing to give him a chance - and that means not yanking him the first time things look bad.

We're WAY past the first time that things have looked bad with JC, aren't we?

It pains me that a monumental (perhaps miraculous) turnaround by JC may well be our only path to fielding even a good football team. How did we get here?

Jake's play had as much to do with this as the line, IMO.
