It's being reported that David Barrent has changed his commitment to Michigan State. Still a rumor but seems to have legs.

It's been confirmed.
We just lost a 4 star kid who grew up a Hawk fan to Michigan State. There are some serious problems in Iowa City right now.

There are some serious problems with the definition of the word "committment" right now.

Wow. Just... wow.
Michigan and I'd feel better. But Michigan State? Good Lord how we've fallen.

Would you be quick to encourage your kid to join this program at the moment?

I am not trying to make an excuse, but I guess his dad played in college at NIU with MSU's O-Line coach.
Still sad that we lost an instate kid to MSU.

how many big in state lineman have amounted to anything?
If he cant create gaping holes against Ankeny, Im not torn up about losing him.

Yanda and Gallery did alright recently. Even McMahon.

Gallery wasn't recruited as a lineman, and Yanda didn't come directly from HS.
McMahon is a decent example. Hard to think of another that was a touted recruit in an Iowa HS.

McMahon was a walkon.
of all the hyped lineman in Iowa..how many panned out?
Casey Shelton? No.
Blake Larson? No.
Kanellis? no.
Blum? No.
Bentler? No.
Our best lineman have been kids who played hoops and were athletic but not huge in HS,
Gallery wasn't recruited as a lineman
I keep forgetting that about him. He's so damn big, it's hard to think of him as anything other than an OL.

Wasn't he like 215 when he came to Iowa? I saw that guy at the Res once just after his senior year, he was ginormous.

I'm going to spend the day on the other site. Should be awesome.

I've never really gotten into the whole recruiting thing very much. I pretty much start caring when they arrive on campus. In the year 2011, when this Barrent kid maybe cracks the MSU depth chart for the first time, I'm sure I'll have long since forgotten about him.
As an aside, Pete McMahon was a high school classmate of mine. From what I remember, he was getting plenty of interest coming out of his junior year, but was suspended for the first 6 games of our senior year after getting busted for alcohol over the summer. The interest in him pretty well dried up after that, and he ended up walking on at Iowa and paying his own way for a couple years.

What's this kid going to do when the MSU OL coach leaves after his frosh or soph season to coach somewhere else?
Pick a school, not a stand-in dad.

I can somewhat understand a kid leaving Iowa for Michigan or Florida but Michigan St.? Let's hope this is the bottom.

Some of those dudes at the other site really need to step away from their computers. There are much more important things in life than getting pissed off about an 18 year old's college decision.
Besides, Barrent has stated a desire to go into engineering. What kind of engineering program does Iowa have compared to MSU? (honest question, i really have no idea)

I agree however it is a bit concerning when this sort of thing happens with an in-state kid. I quit following recruiting rankings after Willie Guy so I honestly I hadn't heard of this kid until about a month ago.

It's not so much losing one kid. It's losing an instate kid to a sucky school and what that signifies as to the condition of the FB program.
Can you say TANKING?
The 2009 recruiting class at Iowa will double tomorrow night.
