I dont understand the signing. Gatens and he are very similar. It appears we are going to have 12 guys between 6'3 and 6'6 during the Likcleiter era.

Might work at Butler, but I don't think it will work in the Big Ten.

Kurt Looby is over 6'6 and we can see how that is turning out. I'm just sayin'...

I understand this, but I just don't think you pass guys that can play at a high level and help your program. Iowa hasn't had a decent "big" man since Acie Earl. Erek Hanson was good his last year I guess.

I am underwhelmed with May.

Mays a very good athlete but his ball handling is behind the curve for someone you would consider a big time 2 or 3 prospect.

Recruiting was my main original reservation. As yet, he's done little to allay those concerns.

At Butler he did have some 6'8"/6'9" types who could rebound and shoot it, so I remain hopeful. He's never going to win by out-athleting other teams in the Big Ten...but you've got to at least have some size to rebound and defend at a competitive level.

Look at it in terms of what's coming in versus what's going out.

Year 1
OUT: Gorney, Looby, Johnson, Freeman, Bohall
IN: Gatens, Tucker, Fuller, Davis, Brommer, Bawinkel, Lickliter (walk-on)

Year 2
OUT: Tate, Angle
IN: Cougill, May and 1 more TBD

I'd argue that recruiting is trending upward already.

Charles Barkley would say otherwise. But then again, I don't see Barkley on the roster either.

Nonetheless, let's look at it this way:

Ideally we'd be able to grab talented kids that fit all the positions - ball handlers, mid size, and big guys.

But... the program really can't be choosy right now. So, would you rather grab a big guy that sucks just because he is the right size? Or would you rather grab the best kids you can get, turn the ship around, and then be able to get choosier?

I know which strategy I would take.
