First of all, I'm not an expert so take it for what it is worth.
#1 sorry in advance for the possible misspelling of names, I worked last night then went to the practice. I'm pulling an all nighter here and am not taking the time to look up spelling of names.
okay, observations:
Brodell, Moeaki, Stross, Hundertmark, Tarpanian, and Brinson were all out of pads and working the sidelines.
Paine, Chaney, DJK, Sandeman were working on KO returns. Bernstein and Spievy also caught some deep balls from the jug machine.
QB- Jake still has accuracy problems and missed the most during drills. Stanzi and Weinke looked the best during passing drills, at least with accuracy. During the scrimmage I thought Jake looked like the best QB, better than last season. He did throw a couple of quick slants right into the chest of Sash though, should of been pick 6. Jake found DJK a couple of times on the flag route that busts the cover 2. He was able to hit this pass twice and put the ball where only DJK could catch it. I'm not sure if Stanzi was 100% but he lacked some arm strength on the deep ball. He put one ball on the inside of the receiver that should of been a pick, it was a bad pass. McNutt has the smoothest footwork and the best ball fake of the QB's. It all looks great until he throws the ball, highly inaccurate. I thought Weinke looked the best of the two frosh, I think he has a bright future in black and gold.
RB- Didn't have a lot of running room. Green is our obvious #1 and should carry the load this season. I think once he gets more of a feel as the season progresses he will be a better back. He missed the cut back lanes a couple of times and opted for running straight ahead into defenders. Guillory, nothing special, a change of pace guy maybe. Hampton and Robinson looked good for frosh but had a hard time finding running room against the 1st team D. Both of them need to learn to run more north and south, they can't run to the sidelines and beat everyone to the corner at this level.
WR- DJK was the best WR option on the field. Chaney might surprise a few people this season. Sandeman looked improved. Paine has a lot to learn about playing WR.
OL- Bulaga went through drills but didn't scrimmage. The line missed him dearly. They opened up a decent hole or two against the two's but once they went 1's vs 1's they allowed 3 sacks in a row. Mitch King practically killed Olsen both during drills and live scrimmage. Bruggeman worked at C and Eubanks was G. Olsen the other G and Calloway and Hanagan at T. Didn't see Doering and he may have been out. #69 Hanagan? played LT and was owned by Clayborn three plays in a row. It was an ugly day for these guys and a real cause for concern.
TE- Reisner really stood out today, Meyers looked bigger than last year and about the same skiil wise. Meyers would drop one, then make a nice catch. Reisner will be a good one before he is gone.
DL- Gonna be nasty. Clayborn was the star of the show today, Kroul was steady like always. King was unblockable and disrupted about every play. I don't think Ballard played much if at all. Klug looked impressive as did Binns. There is some decent depth developing on the line and they should anchor a tough D.
LB- Tarp was on the sidelines starters were Hunter, Edds, Coleman. There was a big hit early against the 1's, it was Troy Johnson. Depth looked good with Anger subbing in at MLB. They have some really good LB's that will benefit from the strong defensive line.
DB- Starters were Dalton, Greenwood, Bernstein, Fletcher. Matched up with 3 wide with a nickle that put Bernstein on the slot and Spievy on the corner. Speivey might be a surprise this season as he was on the field a lot today. Prater looked decent in back up duty playing some nice coverage. Sash was 2nd string SS and could of had a couple of picks. Tillison was #2 FS but didn't factor much. I would like to see a replacement for Greenwood and hopefully Sash will step up. Greenwood is a solid player but hits like a kitten.
K- More misses than makes, need a lot of work these next two weeks. Both kickers.
