This weekend, for the first time in its history, the hallowed halls of Carver-Hawkeye Arena will not play host to one of America's most prestigous basketball tournaments: the Hawkeye Challenge...the Amana Classic...the Super Chevy Shootout, by another other name is still a rose.

No longer will Tennessee State and Ohio battle to a furious finish in front of 11 people at 7:00 on a Friday night. No longer will legendary tandem Larry Morgan and Mac "My Son Kent" MacCausland be there to call the Saturday night championship. No longer will Steve Alford send the boys out there in gold to honor the title game.

The memories. Gary Trent in town. The comeback from 13 down to beat Northern Illinois in the 2003 Challenge. Larry Eustachy's return to coach Southern Mississippi to the consolation. The legendary thriller against Tulsa to win the 2000 title. The epic triumph over Detroit Mercy in the 1998 final. Playing Loyola Marymount before they were famous.

Remember, too, the heartbreaks. The semifinal loss to Arkansas State in the '86 semifinals. Louisiana-Lafayette's stunning championship last year, the first #4 seed to win it. The USCB players crying after the near-upset in the '89 finals.

We've lost the challenge, but we'll never lose the memories, boyz.

The Gorn Star used to get up for this tournament like no one else. He was always on fire. NO ONE could compare to Gorn Star in this tournament.

Damn you NCAA eligibility rules! Curses upon you, graduation!

The Gorn Star averaged an impressive 2.0 points and 2.0 rebounds while shooting 25.0% (1-for-4) from the field in his senior year in the Hawkeye Challenge.

He was slightly overshadowed by Kurt Looby's 6 points and 8 rebounds in the third place game against Eastern Illinois.

The impact of a big man possessed can never be fully measured in the stat sheet, Lax.

He also made 12.0 perfect subs later that night, a number Loobster could only hope to match in his wildest dreams.

The games may be gone, but the spirit lives on.
