7:00 on ESPNU. Not sure why this one isn't on the BTN - it's a home game, so the BTN would have the rights, but my schedule says the BTN is showing "The Big Ten's Greatest Games" for most of the night, and is not doing any other live game. Must've given the staff the holiday weekend off.

Oh well, this is the last game of the year that won't be on either the BTN or regular ESPN. And it's the last tune-up of the nonconference season before the boys head to Columbus on Wednesday. Doesn't sound like WIU is any good, so hopefully the guys can shake off some of the rust and get that 10th win before conference play.

Also, based on the article I read yesterday, it sounds like we can expect to see a lot more Jarryd Cole from here on out.

Someone posted on the other site once that part of the TV deal is that ESPN gets x-amount of Big Ten games and this is one of the random games they (ESPN) decided to pick.

Hawks win, 58-43. Struggled early and tralied by 1 at the half, but turned it on in the 2nd half with Jermain Davis leading the way (13 pts, 8 rebs, 0 TO).

Note: Tucker did not play. Lickliter was a bit mum as to why on the postgame, but indicated that he needed more practice time to get up to speed.

If this team plays like they have the past 2 games, they're no way they're going anywhere but towards the cellar of the Big 10 with Indiana.

Furthermore, Lickliter can't get along with his best player again this year. Hooray.

Tucker is his best player? Come on.

Edit: And I'm assuming you mean Freeman was the best player last year? You should be a freakin' scout!

Shame on Lickliter for Tucker breaking team rules and getting sent to the hospital.

That message was already sent. Don't put the kid back on the floor, and then bench him the very next game leading into the Big 10 opener.

Someone is saying on HR that he was out due to sickness, possibly mono.

Too hard for Lickliter to say he's sick? If that, why suit him up?

Why not? You ever go to practice? I understand that during Alford's years you got used to making these types of arguments and constantly questioning the coach, but Lickliter is a real basketball coach. With a lot of experience molding young men. Alford did not.

Real basketball coach by what standards compared to Alford? Do we not judge coaches by W's/L's anymore?

Sure we do. But one is not a coach by virtue of the fact that they have wins and losses. People get jobs and recruits for many different reasons. Alford got them both for the same reason, with all due respect to how well Danny Moore played in the 1999 tourney. Alford is an assembler. And his foot stomping was really annoying.

Explain to me how Todd Lickliter is any different than Steve Alford? (Remember Iowa went to the NCAA tournament their 2nd year under Alford and went 14-16 in his first.)

Explain to me how Todd Lickliter is any different than Steve Alford? (Remember Iowa went to the NCAA tournament their 2nd year under Alford and went 14-16 in his first.)

His first year he had Dean Oliver and Jaaks as holdovers along with some decent role players. And he went 14-16. In case you didn't know, Oliver was so much better than Freeman it's laughable. Dr. Tom gave Steve two quality starters. Alford gave Lick none. Maybe a half.

The next year he brought in Recker (who no doubt came because of Steve's proven success as a coach, same with Hogan) and Reggie Evans, who actually might be dumber than you so he probably still thinks Alford is a great coach. Still had Oliver. The team greatly underperformed, but got their shit together for a week and made the tourney. Yippee.

I like to see what Lickliter would do with that crew.

The next year (2001-2002), with a solid crew minus Deano, Alford fell short of 20 wins. A horrible, horrible job. But he did bring in Sommerville, Hansen, Leslie, and Pierce who all played some good ball in college. And he he got Angle to sign on for 2004 along with having Josh Rhodes, Brunner, and Horner on the way for 2002. What did Alford do with the talented players his first three years? Not much on the court, but he did keep recruiting some decent players.

If people want to complain that Lickliter can't recruit. Fine. But he spent decades coaching young men. He's spent more years teaching college kids ball and dealing with their dumb ass decisions and attitudes than you've spent as a legal adult. He started coaching immature high school kids before you were born. But somehow, you know the right way for him to deal with a dumb college freshman. Lick knows how to run his team. He's a coach.

Maybe you think Lickliter is a great recruiter. Or Alford is terrible. That's about the only explanation for not seeing a difference between the two.

My vote goes to the man who carried the Hawkeyes on his back through the Big 10 season and not the guy who dribbled dents into the floor of Carver, killing any semblance of offensive flow.

Iowa still needs a legit starting PG ... badly.

And, am I the only one who cringes whenever David Palmer is in the game? I LOL'd last night when he made a decent spin move only to airball the shot.

Bobby Hansen had a good line for that one: "the surgery was a success, but the patient died."

Good for Bobby.

Palmer is awful. Simply awful. He has some physical skills, so some folks are intrigued by him, but he is never in the right place, is a chucker, and has bad hands.

That spin move and airball epitomized what you get with David Palmer. He does something that makes you think "wow - this guy has skills" and then follows it up with something that makes you think "wow - how did this guy get a scholarship."

Hansen's comment of the year is still this dandy about Tucker:

"He doesn't need a lot of time to squeeze one off."

It's either Dan Bohall or JR Angle.

Freeman may have been the best scorer, but definitely not the best player. Same with Tucker.
