For those Card fans cheering on another NL Central championship and Albert Pujols (The Greatest Baseball Player Ever!).

My prediction: the whole season will depend on Carpenter.

Let's get it on!

Cards will be in 2nd place until mid June, at which time Zambrano and Bradley will each suffer career ending injuries during their fight to the death in the Cubs dugout.

I agree, BLP, Carpenter is the key. It's not reasonable to expect that Lohse will repeat last season. Carpenter needs to win 15 - 20, and Motte needs to be a solid closer, for the Cards to contend for a playoff spot.

Nobody gives a fuck.

Cubs fans amuse me. An almost universally sad, pathetic lot when it comes to baseball (almost universally--I married into a clan of them that are actually quite reasonable, despite their undying dedication to the team).

I've never understood the animosity and little-brother attitude they display. While they are historically perpetual losers in the sport, the franchise is a good one and the fans and team are at least respected.

Cubs fans, however, almost universally suffer from the same affliction as ISU fans--just without reasonable cause.

I like the makeup of the team. While I don't make predictions, at the very least I do think the team will be fun to watch with all of the new young faces. If Carpenter and Wainwright can stay healthy and Motte can emerge as a decent closer, I do think they will be better than most of the "experts" predict.

I am a little worried about Ludwick, but I think Ankiel will improve if he's healthy. Of course the starters have to stay healthy, but there are some question marks in the batting order too. I imagine Tony is pumped as they have so many interchangeable parts among position players, particularly until Glaus comes back (if he does).

Greene had a fantastic spring at the plate and Ludwick struggled. As TLR loves to play with his lineups and batting orders, I'm sure he will tinker with it until he finds one that works/he likes....and then he'll tinker some more. ;)

I understand Tony's messing with the lineup, but the reality is that Greene (who did have a great spring) shouldn't be hitting in the clean-up spot.

Move him up to second and put Ankiel at 4 if you're going to go with this old "1-2-3" "4-5-6" "7-8-9" segmenting of the line-up that TLR seems to love so much. Or, if the pitching match-up is there, move Duncan to 4th.

I have no numbers to back this up, just "heard on the radio" type stuff, but I thought Ankiel simply did not hit as well in the 4 hole as he did in the 2 hole.

Ludwick hasn't played up to a #4 slot this spring, and Greene has been killing it.

I think TLR may be correct on this one.

Video is about $110 for the year, or $19/month. And the blackout is the same as blackouts on your TV.

FYI Judge - Be careful with the mlb.tv purchase these next few days -- they "upgraded" the player this year and there have been lots of problems the last couple days. Hopefully they get the bugs worked out quick. I couldn't get the WGST stream of the Braves game last night at all, but was able to get the WPHT (Philadelphia) stream to work in about the 5th inning. Assuming the technical glitches are worked out, it's a great buy for $15.

He has yet to be named the "official" closer. Pittsburgh had 2 lefties coming up...the vet LHP Reyes was the obvious choice in that situation. This was a big game to get a split with the Pirates and Motte hasn't earned TLRs trust yet. He'll get more chances...we'll have to see what he does with them.

I grew up in the backyard with my retired grandpa as he sipped whiskey and we listened to Cardinals games on his little radio. I'd slipped in catching games the last 5-10 years or so, except when they were on ESPN or Nat'l TV (or KPWB 23 in DM).

Now, I'm catching every game and following much more closely. My oldest is loving that he is able to listen to all the games now, and he asks me every day where we're at in the division and whether the Cubs lost the day before.

Live arm, but has control issues at times. Great first half last year, terrible second half for the Bravos. Terrible start to this year - ERA over 40 (yes, 40). Was one of the primary culprits in the Braves late inning squandering of a 7 run lead in Philadelphia 2 weeks ago. I think he came in and threw 9 pitches - 8 of them were balls and he walked in 2 runs.

That said, he may benefit from a change of scenery, and from what I hear, Duncan is one of the best.

After hearing him brag for a while, in stepped this lefty. He snapped off a viscious curve that dropped the jaws of all the onlookers. McClellan stood there for a second in amazement, and said "Well, I have the second best curveball in the organization........that lefty........was Rick Ankiel...Thought that was pretty cool to see. Wish he could pitch again. I know that it will never happen, but man was he good when he was right....

Carpenter - DL
Ankiel - DL
Ryan - DL
Ludwick - DL
Glaus - DL
Greene - Not on DL, but has had some day to day issues recently.

Can the Cards handle this storm plus their dip of the last week and a half?

Ryan is due back any day....Ankiel should be soon. Strangely, the injuries don't seem to be the biggest problem....the starters have sucked the last time or so through the rotation.

Don't be so quick to write them off. It depends on how quickly they can get healthy. Carp coming back is huge and Ankiel will be back tomorrow (?). Ludwick has started jogging.

They'll be OK. They may not win the tough NL Central, but they'll be around.

Alright you sons of bitches, it's on!

In all reality the Cards have a good shot at another sweep here. Royals are already dreadful in the field, and are forced to put arguably their best bat of late on the bench tonight, bullpen is in shambles, and the bottom of the rotation is pitching.

1st place on July 4. Although no one in the division wants it (Cubs and Brew Crew playing like crap) the Cards have a couple reasons to be optimistic. Plus, they may have a shot at the wild card too. GO CARDS!

Excellent performance by Wainwright last night. I am not so optimistic about Wellemeyer vs. the Brewers tonight.

To me Ankiel looks completely lost at the plate right now. I think that he had 4 Ks last night. I'd much rather see Stavinoha as the 3rd outfielder with Rasmus and Ludwick than have either Ankiel or Duncan out there.

Rasmus is really coming on. At some point, Ankiel needs to look in the mirror and either get "it" back or grab a seat on the bench. They have the pieces to make a run this year. One more starter and they would be real contenders.

I think if Lohse comes back healthy and Welle can start repeating last week's 8 inning performance they will be more than fine.

I'm telling you, Stavinoha.

I'm also about ready to kick Thurston to the curb.

Agreed on that one. He's not a major league talent. Sadly, you would have had your wish if DeRosa were not injured.

Oh, and lastly, when I was a kid I think that we called people like Khalil Green mama's boys. I bet that he was always too "nervous" to have sleepovers at other kids' houses.

Stavinoha is great and all, but both Dunc and Ankiel have had 20+ homer seasons, this is pathetic.

Put Derosa at 2nd, move Skip back to the outfield, get Glaus back at 3rd, Ryan at short, and your are done. Although it would be nice to have one more power bat... time for the teachers pets to step up.

Most guys kick ass in their walk year, but Ankiel has always been a contrarian. He is brutal right now.

I think if Ludwick continues to return to form and De Rosa comes back, this team will be in it to the end.

Last year Ankiel had 25 homeruns and 71 rbi's in 120 games.

This year he has 5 homeruns and 22 rbi's in 61 games. Them numbers is off boyz.

In 07, Duncan's last healthy year, he had 21 homeruns and 70 rbi's in 127 games.

This year he has 5 homeruns and 32 rbi's in 78 games. Them numbers if off boyz.

I didn't realize Ankiel was actually more of a power hitter than Dunc, at least by the hr numbers.

It would be nice to get that kind of production again. Hell Glaus had 27 hr's and 99 rbi's last year too. That would be nice to get back. Eff an A.

The rumor was sending Ludwick over for Holliday. It would improve the team in the very near term, but if Ludwick is a very high price to pay for a 3 month rental.

I'm not opposed to Duncan getting the majority of the time in LF. He's bad, but he's not as bad as he used to be.
