Probably old news, but I just stumbled across it.

The Mars Volta will release their upcoming new album ‘Octahedron‘ on June 23rd. Check out the track list below:

1. “Since We’ve Been Wrong”
2. “Teflon”
3. “Halo of Nembutals”
4. “With Twilight as My Guide”
5. “Cotopaxi”
6. “Desperate Graves”
7. “Copernicus”
8. “Luciforms”

I'll admit I didn't give Amputechure too many listens, but I loved their older stuff (and definitely At the Drive-In).

Amputechure was by far their most pretentious work...

I have "Frances the Mute" but don't listen to it often. I dig it, but I just need to be in the right mood.

I listen to ATDI & Sparta considerably more I guess.

if you ever get bored and want to read up a bit on what "Frances" is about check out the Shrouded in Veils forum here :

I think for Veils you have to create a user name but the others you don't.

Frances is one of my favorite albums of all time and #2 to DSotM as far as concept albums go.

Like I said, if you are bored...

Everything they released in terms of that album had clues to the "story" of Frances the Mute. Album art, videos, unreleased hidden songs. It reads like a book and is a great big fucking mystery.

Cool. I'll have to check it out... I really like the album cover and it'll be interesting to do some back story reading.

The album was done by Storm Thorgerson, the guy that did all the Floyd covers (DSotM). It is part an homage to René Magritte's Veiled painting

The singles were also done by Storm and contain, or possibly contain clues about the meaing of the songs on the singles.

The album is a surrealist concept that tells a story over several layers,(it's in part a tribute to Max Ernst and his collage works) an audio collage if you will. There is mythology, Spanish legend, and Max Ernst/Dali style surrealism. It's truly fascinating stuff that people come up with for interpretations. Of course, like surrealist art, ultimately "story" is up to the listener
