Anybody have more details about this incident?
POLK COUNTY, Iowa -- Hospital officials said Tuesday that an Urbandale man died in the hospital after a standoff with deputies on Monday.Polk County sheriff's spokeswoman Jana Rooker said Justin Schleuning, 21, was taken to Mercy Medical Center "after sustaining potential life-threatening injuries during the incident."
Rooker said the Polk County Communications Center received a call from a distraught man, later identified as Schleuning, who claimed that he had a loaded gun and was going to kill himself at 1:16 a.m. on Monday
Schleuning told dispatchers that he was in a vehicle but would not give his exact location.
Officers were able to locate him using the cell phone GPS system. He was found at 350 NW 74th Ave., which is just south of the Ankeny city limits.
Deputies requested additional resources, including crisis negotiators, to assist with the situation. Following several hours of unsuccessful negotiations, the man exited the vehicle, where deputies utilized less-than-lethal rounds to bring the situation to a conclusion, said officials.
Hospital officials said Schleuning died Tuesday.
The Division of Criminal Investigation has been asked to assist with the investigation.

What is a less than lethal round anyway?
Rocket fire is actually another word for 'Legal Round'. Instead of the police rocket firing their gun it at the perp, they just fire it at them instead.

Is it usual for police to fire such things at a guy presumed to have an active weapon?

I have to suspect that cops love and live for this crap.
They get to kill someone without getting into trouble.

Didn't Knoxville from Jackass take one of these to the stomach and he was told that if it was any higher to his chest, it could initiate cardiac arrest?

Any idea if it is a pre-requisite for each candidate to be tazered, attacked by a police dog, clubbed, taken down and cuffed and then shot with a non lethal round before becoming an officer?

tazered and pepper spray are the only requirements I know of, and they're only required if you want to carry them.
