Not a doctor, but infections can start in the skin and get progressively worse/life threatening (e.g. MRSA).

To be honest, it's probably more of a thing of him not playing because he could infect someone else rather than him not being able to go.

I don't care if someone gets a tattoo or not, but why in the hell would you get one anytime around football season if you're a player?!? Aside from a possible infection, you're working out all the time and having physical contact. Sweat's going to make it burn and it's going to get rubbed raw and probably start bleeding. Theoretically, that could end up being a multi-million dollar tattoo for Bulaga. Just a horrible decision on his part.
