View Full Version : Are the Broncos really that good?

I was skeptical after the first few games, but after watching the game yesterday against the Pats, I was pretty damn impressed. Orton seems to have a lot more zip on his balls this year, and he's not making bonehead decisions either.
It also helps that Marshall is on board too. And Moreno is going to be a very good back in Denver's scheme. Just needs to lick the fumbling issues.

Do you really think Orton has somehow changed his mechanics?

No kidding. He had an outstanding game yesterday, but other than that he's basically been the same Kyle Orton we always saw in Chicago. And it's not like he never had good games in Chicago.

This is the same logic that many Hawk fans use in regard to KOK. Since Iowa is winning, KOK has been calling some "good games". A few posters have actually indicated KOK has changed his play-calling philosophy this season.

I'm not sure if you're agreeing or disagreeing with me, but since I'm right I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're agreeing with me.

Except this year he's not throwing INT's.
I have no idea if he's changed his mechanics or not. I just don't remember him throwing the ball that hard from his Chi-town days.
Just a general observation on Denver I guess. If you would have said in August they would be undefeated 5 weeks into the season, I would have politely asked for a sampling of the drugs you were on.

Reap it.
San Diego

It helps that he has much better WRs. Marshall took what might have been picks in Chicago and turned them into catches or at worst incompletions.

I'm agreeing. Better results just have to mean that Orton is doing something different.

Give him time. He'll throw a few more.
His 12 interceptions last year came in just 6 games. He had an 8 game stretch where he didn't throw any.

San Diego - W
Baltimore - L
Pittsburgh - W (the Steelers have looked like shit all year, can't finish games)
San Diego - L (I'll concede a split w/ the Chargers)
Giants - L
So even at a 2-3 stretch, they would still have a pretty respectable 7-3 record.

They have a terrific defense and an offense that's good enough to get the job done. Trent Dilfer's wearing a Super Bowl ring this very minute because of just such a mixture.
I have to say: I was very critical of how Pat Bowlen handled things over the past 9 months...from Shanahan's firing, to hiring a rookie head coach who's younger than some of his players, to the whole Cutler/Cassel fiasco, etc. And I was far from alone.
As of now, Bowlen, Xanders, McDaniel, and Orton are making a whole lot of people put their feet in their mouths -- and I'm one of them. The Broncos have something to prove -- they're playing like it and proving it.

He almost is. He's 33, I believe.
I understand the new coach at Tampa Bay is even a few months younger.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Denver go 4-2 or even 5-1 over that stretch. Nor would it surprise me for them to be "exposed" like you say.
The knock on them at 4-0 was that they hadn't played anybody. Well, they beat the Pats yesterday...and, while this year's Pats aren't (yet) playing like the Pats we've all come to know and resent, they're still a quality football team.
I wouldn't call myself a "believer" yet. But I do know that the Denver "D" is legit and playing even better than expected. If the offense continues playing as efficiently as it has been, there's no reason they can't beat any of those teams on the list.

Sure, but I don't know if I'd give him that much of the benefit of the doubt on that one. He went two weeks after returning from that injury and played fine, then closed out the year with a few bad games.

And the Chargers will be back far enough at that point they'll have a tough time catching the Broncos down the stretch.
But, we'll see how good they really are coming up. They've at least put themselves in a really nice situation and have the team buying into where they are going.
McDaniels coached Matt Cassell up to maintain success and he seems like he might be doing the same thing with Orton.

The Raiders also beat the Bengals and Steelers in recent weeks. But, yeah that was a bad loss. The Broncos will still finish ahead of where I expected them to this season.
Brand new, first time head coach and they lost their 'elite' 'franchise' 'Pro-Bowl' QB after all.

It is not hard to predict that an average team with a low level QB like Kyle Orton isn't going to make the playoffs, but at 5-0 that was still a great call. Kudos.
