The University of Iowa football team has begun reaping the rewards of a spectacular 10-2 regular season. Seven Iowa players have been named to either the Coaches or Media first all-Big Ten teams. Junior offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga has been named the Offensive Lineman of the Year and Head Coach Kirk Ferentz, for the third time, is the Big Ten's Dave McClain Coach of the Year.

Bulaga as OL of the Year? I think he is a beast, but he didn't have the greatest of seasons.

the bulaga award is shocking

Two other slight head scratchers.

1) Moeaki as first team?
2) No honorable mention for McNutt.

Also, how did Greg Jones of MSU now win Defensive Player of the Year (I know he did for media, but not coaches)? I would have even put Odrick behind Angerer in this category as well.

moeaki only had 16 catches all year after the uni game

Pretty damn impressive to get 16 (coaches) or 18 (media) of 24 possible starters listed within the first "three" teams of your all-conference team.

Seriously? Donahue HM?

He could do no better than second team in my opinion. Mesko from Michigan was the most impressive to me this season.

they both missed what? 1.5 - 2.5 games? I think DJK's kick return sealed his 2nd team status but both were equally effective.

McNutt had some big catches, but in the stats he was quite a ways behind DJK.

you sure about that?

Well, you figure B10 games only for the conference awards:

-DJK is 7th in receptions per game--McNutt isn't listed in the Top 10.
-DJK is 3rd in receiving yards per game--McNutt isn't listed in the top 10.
-DJK is 4th in all purpose yards per game--McNutt isn't in the Top 10
-Neither makes the top 10 WRs in TDs.

So I will say yes, I am quite sure about my statement as it relates to the B10 and this award.

You're counting Arkansas State in there. :)

Take Arkansas State out and you get:
McNutt
18 rec 411 yds 5 TDs

DJK
36 rec 599 yds 1 TD

Double the receptions, 50% more yards and fewer TDs.

Regardless, look at the position rankings, which is a pretty good way to determine the pecking order for All-Big Ten teams. DJK is in the top 10 in those rankings. McNutt isn't in any of them.

I'm not knocking McNutt. He is 100% clutch and for the team dynamic he is up there with DJK in terms of importance. The B10 numbers and position ranks show a wide gap in where they rank in the B10, though, and that is a major component of All-Big Ten teams..

I will admit his catches are low compared to others in the Big Ten, but he his receiving average (21.8 ypc) is the best in the Big Ten (3rd best in the nation) and his 7 receiving TD are tied for the second most in the Big Ten.

If you would have been at the Michigan game, you would have seen Mesko make Donahue look like a true frosh. There was no comparison, and Donahue actually had a decent game.

He only gets credit for games played in the Big Ten, though.

So, he gets only 5 TDs. That puts him tied for third with 4 other guys. Not a lot of separation, as you've got 6 guys with at least 5 (two with 6) and 10+ guys with at least 4.

His ypc avg goes up slightly in B10 Play, but stand-alone that just insn't enough. He simply has few catches (18). The number 10 player in the league has 34. That is almost double McNutt.

He also has simply too few yards (411). To even crack the Top Ten, he'd have needed 464. I don't know where 411 puts him, but I'd guess somewhere around 14-15.

He was great for us, and will get only better, but his numbers just weren't there for post-season honors.

Donahue started on fire. If he would have not tapered off, I'm thinking they were damn close.

Mesko had the consistency that Donahue could not maintain.

Is there some rule that says only look at Big Ten games? If so, how the hell did Moeaki get first team then (Take away his 10 catches against UNI and 1 against ISU and he has 15 on the year)?

Without pulling up the actual award "rules," the award is supposed to be about B10 play only.
