Good stuff. It's very interesting. When I was in college, I remember thinking, WTF, how is this how it's supposed to go down.

The fact that everyone used to wear hats is one of the more intriguing phenomenons in American culture. I'd hate to see the sales curve for hat makers as the 50's ended. I'll bet there was a lot of head scratching going on.

JFK killed the hat biz when he was innagurated in 1961 bare-headed.

It looks like everybody was better dressed and drove cooler cars 70 years ago.

As well as my single handed attempt to bring back the beret. Damn, I was so frickin' cool.

Thanks for the assist TH; not sure what I was doing wrong, the pics showed up for me just fine. I spend quite a bit of time on Shorpy; love that site. The photo quality is quite remarkable.

The link says it is; plus there's a recent photo (directly below the one linked) showing how the same area looks now.

Shorpy is great. I think the problem with your posts was probably that Shorpy doesn't allow you to link from their site. I uploaded them to imageshack.

Imagine people looking back at today 70 years from now and seeing tramps in sweatpants and Ugh boots.

I really struggled with my bearings on the 1st couple of pics. I knew that the Pentacrest was up to the right, but it just didn't fit in my mind, since I thought it was looking down Clinton street and not Washington.
I should send these pics to my aunt in Ia City. My Father's family was from Kalona, but knew Iowa City well. She would have been a teenager in 1940

Ask her if she made out in the theater. If her face turns pink, she probably did.
