Des Moines animal control Officer Cindy Alley remarked: "First time I've heard of this happening".
Really Cindy?

I thought it was pretty common. I am a little surprised by Cindy's cavalier comments.

I have a customer who is a really neat guy and a super hard worker / get it done self sufficient guy. He and I went to the ISU / ATM game and he was telling me a couple of his deer stories.
For a while he lived up in Ohio and taught ag engineering at one of the OSU offshoot schools. He also bought and fixed tractors on the side...and farmed while he was up there. He said he came home late from an auction one night and hit a deer with his truck about 5 miles from his house at about 2 AM. He went out there and found it laying on the ground and when he went over to it and it got up hurt with a broken leg. He said he ended up chasing it around the field for 30 minutes before he finally killed it with a hammer. : )
Since he couldn't pick it up he went home and got his wife and some rope. His wife backed up the truck as he used the rope to pull the deer up into the bed...wrapping it around the 'headache rack' behind the rear window.
He said it took 40 minutes to get this big buck up there and since he had the rope around the horns he tied the horns to the top of the headache rack so the deer was basically standing up in the back. Since it was out of season he was kind of worried and covered it up with a tarp. He said about 1/2 way home they had a car behind him...and then all of a sudden the thing came back to life and started jumping around again. The deer was moving around so much his wife was freaking out a little so they pulled over and he whacked it again.
He made a similar mistake a few years later...only with a smaller deer...which he put inside his VW bug. When he got home and went it to get the stuff to clean the deer...by the time he came back out the deer came back to and started going ape shit in the car. Kicked the radio into the dash, tore the headliner out of the car, broke out a window and also broke the recline mechanisms in both seats so they wouldn't sit up anymore. He had his wife open the door and then when the deer made a break for it he 'poleaxed' with a 4 foot piece of 2x4...then dressed it out. He said the 2x4 then got cut down and was used to hold the seats up from then on. : )
