So I'm flying solo tonight and haven't eaten jack all day. Looking for suggestions for good, perhaps new or off the beaten path, restaurants to try. Not feeling steak, BBQ or seafood. Would prefer to avoid far West Des Moines (Jordan Creek, Waukee, etc.)

Upon entering Maxies your pores will absorb the nursing home smell of piss and death. Very difficult to wash off.

Go to Cafe Su in Valley Junction. You'll thank me later.

Maxies is the only one listed thus far I've not yet tried (and I've enjoyed them all, although I thought Latin King was slightly overrated).

+1 on Latin King. I've never understood the love affair everyone seems to have with that place.

Sounds like they took care of the problem. I haven't been there in two years-Went for my wife's grandmother's b-day. The stench in the entire restaurant almost prevented me from eating.

Actually, you have me curious now, next trip to DSM I will have to go there with a critical nose. Hmm.

Have you been to Star Bar? Or Taki?

Yeah, like both of those, but Taki more for Sushi than cooked food.

Went back to my old hood(Beaverdale) ealier today and noticed that B&B Barbeque was replaced by some place called Tally's. I always enjoyed B&B. Perhaphs Tally's is similar. Might be worth checking out.

They have great Sushi for sure. The show they put on at the grill is fun if in a group.

Middle aged men eating alone in a restaurant makes me uncomfortable. People won't realize that you're happy to be w/out your wife and kids and will either think you a social misfit or an axe murderer.

I'm smoking spare ribs right now. Thought I'd have trouble keeping the temp up, but I'll be damned, it feels like it's 70 in my driveway w/the sun and no wind.

BTW, Flying Mango is great. Next to Sam and Gabe's, it's my favorite restaurant.

Like many Beaverdale Restaurants, there always seems to be lots of gays there. From what I understand you're a pretty fit and handsome man. Maybe a little buttfucking to cap off the night? If you're going to go this route, don't over-eat.

Agreed on the Latin King being a bit overrated. I've always thought Maxie's has the best ribs in the DM area, but obviously it's a matter of personal preference.

I have no explanation as to why I haven't tried the Radish. I've only heard good things and it's about 5 minutes from my house.

The Radish. Eat at the bar. I had the best Chicken Parmagiana I've ever eaten in my life there a few weeks back; however, if you're itching for a prime rib and it's the special that night, call ahead and reserve one.

You should go to A Dong, Gus. We know how you love A Dong. (pwned you, brahhh.)

Pleased to report I enjoyed some Cafe Su last night, headed out to Django tonight, being feted by some friends.

If you haven't been to the Radish, the canneloni (sp?) there is imo the best dish in the tri-county area.

Friday and Saturday nights have smoking hot belly dancers. They used to anyways.

Food is ok.

Can you go through the line more than once at Hu Hot?

The potato encrusted halibut at The Waterfront is great, but that place is much better as a market than a restaurant.

I was at Latin King last Friday night. It wasn't the best I've had there. The service there does not have it's equal in DSM. I end up tipping over 20% every time I'm there because the service is overwhelming.

Maxie's has always been a place where the crowd is all dependant on when you go. If you hit it at 5pm on a Saturday night, you're going to walk into a Lawrence Welk tribute crowd. Wait 2 hours and the median age drops about 30 years, after Sambud falls asleep in his La-Z-Boy.

I'd suggest J. Benjamins, the crowd is young, light, and the food and service is fantastic. Plan to wait a bit though. Their dining area is about as big as my shed.

The Royal Mile has a great atmosphere, but if you think psuedo English food is good, god help you. I would rather comb a corn field for a deer turd, and I'm of about 90% Welsh blood.

I have been to the Radish twice. First time I was very disappointed. Had the kids w/ us and it took 45 minutes to get the food after we ordered. That made for an unpleasant experience. Plus food was not good and some items were cold. Second time was better. (No kids 2nd time). And service was quicker and food was hot. The prime rib was excellent.
