How long did it take? Got some purchases lined up & was curious how soon I should expect it. Mailed mine in 10 days ago, and signed up for direct deposit.

Over a month ago. The surprising part was that Iowa paid me in under 10 days (last year it took about a month).

I prefer electronic filing myself.

I give all my documents to one of the firm partners, who enters it into the computer in about 4 minutes and prints it off. I take it home, get the Mrs. to sign, and drop it in the mail.

It's not "getting a refund back $50 at a time" because it's your GD money. You're just letting the government take less of your money every paycheck.

Face palm......... it is the same money Mikey- you have the same amount withheld and you owe the same amont in taxes at the end of the year- the difference is what you are entitiled to either in each paycheck or as a refund at the end of the year. I am aware you are talking about the money you can hypothetically make if you put it into an account over the year- some people are good at this, some are not.

I got stuck doing it your way once with my bonuses and commissions and royally screwed myself by having to pay in a chunk. I hadn't planned to cut a big check so it hurt, so this way works out better for me.

If your way works out better for you then godspeed.

It's not the interest savings. You have to overpay significantly for that to make any real difference. It's the fundamental idea of the thing that bothers me.

I'm not saying over paying by $1-2k is a huge deal. - again, you're forgoing like $50 in interest. I'll actually probably get a small refund for 2009, because I didn't take into account having a kid halfway through the year. And to someone like Lwade who just wants to avoid having to cut a check, that's fine too.

I'm talking about the idea that a refund is some sort of financial boon. Again - it is literally your money. You gave it to the government over 12 months, then they gave it back. That's it. Again, I'm not saying that you need to micromanage your withholding so you're within $10 - I'm just saying it's dumb to intentionally overpay so you can get a big return. Why not just set up automatic withdrawal to a savings account?

because some of us don't know what kind of bonuses and commission we are going to make, which could significantly add to our AGI- I would gladly sacrifice a couple hundy to avoid having to fund something where I have to pay a higher interest rate on by using a CC or liquidate another saving account- I don't need that money each paycheck and to me the hassle is a wash

I've got an even better deal for you, funnel. Reduce your fed withholding by $500 per month. Send me that $500 per month and I will return it to you at the end of 12 months + $1. That's $1 more than you are getting in your deal with Uncle Sam, and my credit rating is better than theirs.

Not only because of a the tax refund, Mikey- it is just the vehichle I used to end up with the lump sum to pay for them-

for christ sakes I will tell you what would have happened-

I would have put it into an ING account- then every time I would have went Ice fishing I would have taken out a couple hundy- would have went to the casino, or something else stupid with my new little bank account, or god forbid my wife needed yet another new purse or new pair of shoes so she dips into that account and we would have had every intention of paying it back next pay period.

Then, my daughter moves up a level in gymnastics or dance or some other damn deal which requires a different payment, nickels and dimes later I make a mistake and don't withhold enough or I make more money than expected......you forget I have tried it your way and got burnt once......and then I have to liquidate the rest to pay off Uncle Sam or Debit who whoever is holding the tax bill at this point- Here I sit at home on Halo instead of the beach and have to raid another savings account to pay of the carpet guy.

Trust me it's better this way....and if it helps the government then it's OK- I'm a fucking liberal anyway

It always has been. Withholding has been a license for the government to spend, spend immediately, and to increasingly spend in a profligate manner without the worry of the consequences of their actions. Those consequences are our massive debt.

Oh. I really hadn't thought about it. I am not looking for an expensive one. I have a shitty Washburn electric now but I play more acoustic stuff. I was probably just going to take 200-300 into Uncle Ike's next time I am in Dubuque and fiddle around until I find the right one.

Do you have any suggestions? I have been playing for about three years but have only gotten serious about it in the past six months.
