The gun brand new starts around $1600. I got a great deal on it and picked it up for $1200. The scope I wanted was $700, but the wife wouldn't agree to that so I had to settle on the Leupold Mark AR 3-9 x 40. It ran around $300. The rings to attach said scope to the gun were $100. So I have around $1600 in it. I could have gotten a much cheaper gun, but this one is one of the best out there. Coincidentally it is also made in LeClaire, Iowa.

It is my new coyote gun, but it should work to kill whatever I want it to. Zeroing it in tomorrow.

You can cut down small trees with those too.

Or so I've heard at least.

It looks like the front sight is smack dab in the middle of your scope. That would bug the shit out of me. Is that intentional, or just bad angle for the photograph.

I have my AR with straight steel sights. But that's what I'm used to.

Taking the front sight off isn't an option for me. Luckily it isn't an issue as the scope "sees" right through it. My wife just looked through it and I had the collapsible stock out to where I like it and she had issues with the front sight. When I moved the butt stock in closer and got her eye closer to the scope it disappeared. I was very worried about the front sight, but was reassured it wouldn't be an issue, and it isn't.

Cool. Thanks for the visual and the explanation.

Oh, and you probably know this, but make damn sure the charging handle is locked before firing. Never happened to me, but I saw a kid in basic who's latch spring was shot. The charging handle shot back and broke his nose...

Ouch. Thanks for the heads up. I will make sure I always double check that.

My biggest problem now is trying to find some different ammo. Locally everyone seems to only have 55 grain ammo. From what I have read the twist of my barrel is capable of handling up to 77 grain, and I have heard the heavier slugs are more accurate. For hunting I want to be as accurate as I can. For plinking it isn't that important so I will probably get whatever is cheap and good enough.

I bought ammo off of a guy off Gun Broker.

This is what I bought:
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=164779321

He basically uses Gun Broker to advertise his site. http://www.sgammo.com , as he up charges the handling fee from Gun Broker for his auctions so he makes the same $$$ either way. So if you trust me (and him), just buy it off his site and save the money.

They shipped very fast, and had good communication. I'll buy from them again.

I need to see how this stuff shoots in my DPMS. I've been waiting for the ground to dry up and go. .223 is still expensive.

FYI- If anyone local wanted to buy a bunch and split, I have interest.

You must have a small penis. Only men with a small penis would need to own a gun...something like this must mean it's microscopic.

I just thought someone needed to say that since this is a gun thread and all.

How do you like the steel cased rounds? I am very weary of buying Russian ammo. From what I have read it is very dirty. BTW, when I bought my scope I also bought a very slick cleaning kit. Fastest I have ever used. I am definately getting one for my shotgun. Hoppe's BoreSnake. Very impressed with it.

I haven't shot any yet - my AR is still virgin. Bought it on sale this winter and was waiting for the weather to turn. I was going to go coyote hunting with my uncle, and that got called off due to family things. All I've done is clean the shipping grease out of it.

I have two of those snakes, one for my .22 pistols and rifle, and one for my .40 S&W. The only issue with this for me is that the .223 is going to get crap in places this won't touch, so I'm debating on getting one or not. Probably will, but that's how I am. At least snaking the bore with be fast.

I have no practical need for such a weapon, but the M4 would be fun to plink with. One thing thoug, .223 ammo has gotten expensive. Are you zeroed in at 50 yards or what? What will you use it for? If you're within 100 yards or so of a target, I always thought a red dot sight would be all you'd need

SidJefferies
04-12-2010, 11:54 PM
I haven't zeroed it in yet, I am doing that tomorrow. I am setting it up so I am at zero at 200 yards. This gun is for coyotes and I want to be able to reach out and touch them. I know a guy who has the same gun and kills crows at 250+ yards consistently. He has more expensive glass than I do, but I think I can get close to what he can do.

.223 ammo is expensive. I need to figure out what ammo I will use for hunting. I want that to be the ammo that the gun shoots the best. Then I will figure out what cheap ammo it shoots the best and buy mostly that. If I can use cheap ammo for hunting that would be great, but I don't think 55 grain bullets will shoot the best. Tomorrow I will find out for sure.

Before I got the scope I took it to the range and was able to get 3" groups at 100 yards using the iron sights. This was w/o any shooting rests. I am excited to see what this gun can do. From all reports that I have read and from talking to guys it sounds like this gun should be a tack driver.

I think your best bet for this gun is to zero at 50 yards with a red dot and go from there. The .223 is a pretty flat trajectory bullet up to 50 yards.

SidJefferies
04-12-2010, 11:57 PM
My targets will very rarely be at 50 yards. I expect most shots I take will be 150+ yards.

i personally dont care if people own guns but really, what is the point of owning something like this or (like my brother) owning about 50 guns, most which are rarely, if ever fired. You can't hunt with alot of them so you bascially own them to go to a range. Seems silly.

+1, but for me it has more to do with being a cheap motherfucker who refuses to spend 1200 bucks just to shoot some paper targets.

Now if someday I snap and go on a killing spree, than yes I could easily justify dropping 1200 bucks on a gun like this

Same here, but I just got out the other day and shot my new M-4. 3" groups at 100 yards with the iron sights.

For you gun guys-If you don't already have one, get an AK. Lots of fun to be had after the thrill/fun of the AR has worn off. AKs have a bad wrap for their poor accuracy, however I've found that to not be the case.

I bet you have a lot of things, or participate in things that I think are silly. Got kids? Like Golf? Enjoy Baseball?

I think all three of those things are retarded, and should be avoided like typhus. And Typhus isn't silly. Just the vaccine put me on my ass for 3 days...

Cheap gun, cheap ammo, and surprising performance. You can't go wrong with an AK, or an SKS.

AK-47, the very best there is. When you absolutely, positively, have to kill every single motherfucker in the room; accept no substitute.

The bore snakes are kick ass. You will have to clean out other parts yet, but at least the barrel will be squeaky clean.

I avoid the Russian & steel ammo like the plague. Sure it's cheap but it's junk and dirty, dirty, dirty. Had a couple rounds not fire in the chamber, that's uncomfortable situation. Steel is really hard on the chamber.

I've had really good luck with Remington UMC .223 for target shooting.

http://images.cabelas.com/is/image/cabelas/s7_216821_imageset_01?$main-Medium$

It can be had for $8/box if found on sale. Shoots well & clean. Not the best, but acceptable (3/4 - 1" group at 100 yards).

I've smoked a total of 2 times since last June. It's not a big deal to me. I am just an extremely cheap person. I never said I wouldnt want to shoot a gun, I just said I would never spend 1200 bucks on one. For 1200 bucks I would expect to get something like an RPG or some mad amount of C4.

SidJefferies
04-13-2010, 09:55 PM
I looked into the rpg and c4, but it was a touch out of my price range. ;) I get what you are saying. It wasn't easy talking my wife into this gun when I could get the a similar gun for half as much. Thankfully she understands that I want the best so I can do my best. I am actually looking into a prairie dog hunt late this summer in South Dakota. I think it will be a blast.
