Your nosey, possibly larcenous neighbor for my 7-year old, truck-driver mouth neighbor girl. This afternoon she called my kids "retards" and "fucking bitches" and said she was going to "kick [their] asses." Later she wrote a note to them with some other vulgarities and expletives, but I only found a few shreds of paper as evidence (couldn't really make anything out). LM3 told me the note was "really naughty". Nice.
Trade?

Okay, but I want to trade the ones that are right next door, the ones with the 'gifted' adult son who lives at home and will never, ever leave.

My kids are no angels, that's for sure. But we don't use language like that around them - Mrs. Monster RARELY swears at all - so I'm a bit perturbed that they're hearing this from a neighbor kid.
I actually feel sad for her. Its obvious that the adults in her life have very low skills.

Must be the schools. ;) We swear around Little G and she never swears (lectures us for bad words), but she goes to a good school.

I like German Shepherds. I find them to be friendly and they tend to get more of a bad rap than rottweilers. My neighbor in EP had a fat, old rottweiler named Annie. All she wanted to do was cuddle up to me when I went out to get the mail or sit in the garage.

German breeds take to me rather well. Who knows why? As for Pit Bulls, you'll usually see those with a younger group of owners. I'd rather have a Rottweiler or German Shepherd around my kids than a Pit Bull.

Your kids definitely need to make friends with this girl. She is obviously going to be a really cool and popular kid for years to come and will probably give it up at an early age. Now living next to you will make it a bit harder for her to throw out of control keggers while her parents are working the State Fair but I do believe you might be gullible enough to believe that the 20 cars parked on your lawn are all there for a study party.

Your anecdotal example has completely outweighed every other piece of data I have ever read, and I am now convinced that pit bulls are not dangerous.

I would be really interested in seeing the "data" you have read because my guess is it consists mostly of anecdotal examples just like mine. Pit bulls are dangerous animals. I wouldn't want the responsibility. But so are many other large breeds and some small breeds. Sadly pits have become the fad dog for that group of irresponsible people who feel the need to have an aggressive dog (a group that will always exist). Used to be rottweillers, before that it was dobermans and before that it was German shepherds. Someday it will be some other breed. Here is a Gladwell article that I think I've linked before.

Uh, no, that didn't go over my head.
The problem with dog bite statistics is that there's been no real in depth breed specific study. The only "study" that I've ever seen analyzed media accounts of bites and showed pit bulls (and mixes) as the vast majority of fatal attacks and severe injuries. The problem with that is that it's self-supporting, as media accounts sensationalize. The CDC has looked at dog bites in abstract, but they didn't look at breed specifics.
So for example, here's a link that summarizes the study I've read before: http://www.dogsbite.org/bite-study-deaths-maimings.htm . It does support my point, but like I said, it's somewhat less than satisfying as the flaws of the study are limiting.
The main problem that pit bull apologists (and rottweiler, and doberman, etc) ignore is the factor of severity. Any dog can bite. I'm not trying to claim that a pit bull is inherently more likely to bite than a shih tzu. Almost all of the experts agree that a whole host of factors are more likely to be predictive of dog bites than breed - income level of the owner, the sex of the dog (males more likely to bite), previous socialization, etc. The problem is again severity. I would never leave my child alone with my parents little yippy dogs, because you never know if they could bite her. The thing is, if they do ever bite her, they're not going to kill her.
That's what my first somewhat joking post (about stitches vs. face replacement) was referencing. Yes, any dog can snap and attack a human. But if certain breeds do so, they possess far greater capacity to injure or kill. That's why it's absolutely ludicrous to try and pretend that they're no more dangerous than any other dog. Even if the gross number of bites supported that (which I've never found any data supporting), the capacity for damage should be the primary concern.

Any large breed can do a lot of damage but people are repulsed by only a few breeds and I think the negative opinions about those breeds are mostly uninformed. As you note, the statistics don't tell you much -- it appears there is a lot of blame to be shared in almost every serious dog bite case.

Robust and powerful, the Rottweiler is happiest when given a job to perform. His intelligence, endurance and willingness to work make him suitable as a police dog, herder, service dog, therapy dog, obedience competitor and devoted companion. An inherent protector, the Rottweiler is self-confident and responds quietly and with a wait-and-see attitude to influences in his enviroment.

Can't you say that all the dogs mentioned are capable of doing some serious damage? I'm sure a golden could mess you up as much as any other dog, but it doesn't happen as often. The typical golden owner is different than the typical Rottweiler owner. Some issues revolve around the breed, where others revolve around the owners. One must remember as well that no dog, regardless of breed or owner responsibility, can be labeled as "bite free." Just some thoughts.
