Yeah, I'm not sure why he might be so arrogant. Oh, I don't know. Maybe being President of the United States? That might put some starch in your shirt.

There's a big difference between arrogance and confidence. Nobody likes an arrogant person, whether they're President of the U.S., or not. There are too many pictures out there of Obama in this pose for anyone to deny that the guy is arrogant. Only a fool or a sycophant would find that an admirable, or even excusable trait.

Ok, when he's bowing to world leaders he's too subserviant and not projecting a confident enough image to the world. But when one of about a thousand pictures of him taken daily is published with his chin elevated, then he's too arrogant. Got it.

While he may be an arrogant man, I'm not sure we can really deduce that from a photograph.

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Other times, it's just a picture -- and doesn't actually tell us much about the subject of the photograph. But that doesn't stop us from using them to reinforce that which we're already inclined to believe.

I'd say that this -- as well as the "finger in Bibi's chest" -- falls into the latter category.

It's kinda like the famous picture of GWB hugging the daughter of a 9/11 victim:

http://www.snopes.com/politics/graphics/faulkner.jpg

Those who are inclined to believe that Bush is a warm, compassionate man will look at this picture and say "See what a compassionate man he is?"

I'm guessing Mikey doesn't know very many people that get thousands and thousands of pictures taken of them on any given day. And I'm not sure you can conclude that Obama "always pose[es] like [that]". Your sources may prefer this pose over any other and search it out. Maybe.

Ok, when he's bowing to world leaders he's too subserviant and not projecting a confident enough image to the world.

Now, in that case, I do think there's something to be said.

Because it is quite simply a breach of diplomatic protocol for one head of state to bow to another.

And while I can understand a rookie president just a few years removed from the Illinois legislature making this mistake once, that he keeps doing it over and over again is bizarre.

So I'm not going to stick up for him on that one. He needs to cut that out.

Not really. You only give the Prime Minister a backrub once. As for a slight bow in a greeting, I'm not sure you stop doing it to appease your political detractors.

Even if if that were true (and it isn't), it still wouldn't actually say anything about his relative arrogance or humility.

News photographs are random glimpses at a precise moment in time. And editors figured out years ago that they could convey their message by choosing the right photographs.

For instance, compare the myriad cover photos that Newsweek has run of Obama before and since his election -- all of which were varying degrees of flattering -- with the infamous cover photo portraying Newt Gingrich as "The Gingrinch Who Stole Christmas".

I'd pay the most attention to what a politician does, the second most to what they say, and little to what you think their body language intimates.

Yes you do stop -- and not simply to appease your detractors.

You stop because diplomatic protocol has meaning, just as spitting on somebody has meaning. If our president was to intentionally avoid shaking another head-of-state's hand at a gathering of world leaders, it would be widely interpreted as sending a message -- and with very good reason.

One almost gets the sense that Obama keeps doing it so as to not appear to be appeasing his detractors. If that's the case, then it doesn't suggest arrogance so much as childishness.

But you don't really know anything about diplomatic protocol on his level. You've never experienced it and you never will so your assurance that he's sending a message to other world leaders is wishful thinking at best. Nobody seems upset at the bowing other than Republican Americans. And he's already shown with his refusal to supply his actual birth certificate that he'll let 'em play attack dog all day on the nonsense. I have no doubt that you can find talking heads to back you up, but what about actual world leaders that see these political matters on the personal level instead of reading about them through a liberal or conservative filter? Do they see a serious problem with the bowing?
