I was lurking on HROT as I had some time to kill this morning and I came across this on the OT board....its pretty easy to find in there....
My wife works for a bank in the mortgage dept. Some of the stories she tells me are pretty crazy.. From people who drive porches, to celebrity's, to people who just had bad luck.. Lots of them not paying. I asked her if we stopped paying the mortgage, how long could we stay in the house.. She said well over a year before having to do anything. One of the problems is that banks don't like to be proactive in trying to help someone keep their house. They wont do much of anything until your 3 months behind..and most of the time its the investors who will/wont let them do anything.
The craziest story she told me was that some guy had a mortgage with a bank, was renting out the property and stopped paying the bank... Well the Bank was trying to foreclose, and actually offered the family that was renting it, 10k to not destroy or vandalize anything.. She said that happens alot.
