Finally . . .

. . . and too late for this man who already blew his wad on the Nikon.

I found the Magic Mouse greatly improved my iMac, though, so it isn't so bad having to do my Mac work on the Desktop anymore. Turns out it was the Mighty Mouse and not the Desktop aspect that was really bothering me. :)

No offense, but if your "friend" has tried a linux distro lately and still thinks that then they are either a technophobe or an idiot.

Not true. While the package managers are better, if there is a problem, you're pretty screwed, quick.

True on both parts.

Our G5, minus a superdrive issue, has been fantastic. Absolutely no need to upgrade. It handles everything we do (web surfing, email, photos/movies, spreadsheets).

That said, the wife would love a macbook or a new iMac. I don't get it, but I'm pretty sure it's the marketing and new shiny/sparkly thing which appeals to her.

I've been fending them off pretty well so far.

You could probably say that about most any older hardware for those tasks, just for argument's sake. $1500 is a pretty good chunk of money to replace something used just for stuff like watching movies and running spreadsheet software. Now for users like zaph and Judge Kemp who need the processing power, it makes sense.

MacBooks/MBPs cost a lot but for somebody who needs a quad laptop with 8 hours of battery life I don't know that the alternatives would be much cheaper.

depends on what you installed via the package manager... any system update/service pack has the potential to screw a system up - macs included...

More for making movies than watching them, but I get your point. I don't have to "worry" about anything with the Mac, but with my past PC's there was always a bug/spyware/virus yada yada yada. Start-up took forevery, mystery re-boots, etc.

Sure we paid a lot, but I don't have to spend a night every two months screwing around with the thing. It also doesn't "slow-down" for no apparent reason.

See, I understand that you might have had these experiences but I never have experienced any of that. A lot of the negative hype surrounding Windows is just that - hype. Obviously the people who have problems bitch the loudest and since there are ten times more of them using Windows OSs, it tends to look like the OS is a huge disaster. Go look at the Apple forums sometime. They're clogged with people bitching about all sorts of problems with their machines.

No hardware is problem free. Apple hardware is typically at/towards the top of reliability ratings, but companies like Asus produce machines that do just as well for a fraction of the price, which is sort of remarkable when you think about it. It's not 2003 anymore.

The way Windows is coded allows for a lot of backdoors. Also, relatively speaking, nobody is using OSX. 90%+ of Americans and about 97% of worldwide users are running Windows operating systems. Bigger, easier target.

If you were going to write a virus, would you target 10% of the market share or 90% of the market share?

Hey, I've never disliked Apple's notebooks. They're fantastic products and if I need a high end laptop, even to run Windows, an MBP would be among my first choices no doubt.

I just think that in the past the pricing has been ridiculous and their marketing tends to range from a little dishonest to outright fear mongering. What they've done with prices in the past couple years has been great, and they've cut way back on the negative advertising.

I wish people would actually look past the dollar sign to see what is actually there beside the individual piece specs.

And I wish people would use linux instead of macs or windows... oh and they are overpriced - nice machines, but overpriced.

Quoting a good friend of mine, "Linux is free if your time is worthless".

THIS...I put Ubuntu on an older desktop (still a smoking machine) and the first thing was it didn't support my Belkin USB WiFi. I look into getting a program on it to help with that...nothing that isn't 3-10 feet into the tech weeds (IE you better be a at least level 6 geek). So I just buy a new one that is compatible....problem solved...or is it? All of a sudden when I start getting some heavier graphics (not just the desktop) from surfing the web...I get what I call the "White Screen of Death". Ubuntu doesn't support my graphics card either.

The list of coded needed to TRY and fix that problem made me realize how totally and utterly unprepared I am for this type of shit. So I ask one of the help sites...because I'm fine on MS machines...people typically come ask me for help...is this what I should look forward to as I go ahead?

"YEP".

So right now it's a paper weight.

In some ways it is similar to the problems vista had... some companies don't release linux drivers (especially for models not currently in production) if you can determine the chipset you can get it working. On new systems and netbooks it works great... You could try mint... that distro seems to include more drivers out of the box...

I really am trying to justify buying one of these new MacBook Pro's, but the price tag is steep. I need a 15" machine, which immediately starts out at $1799. On top of that, I figure I might as well spend the extra $100 for the HD screen. $1900 for a lap top is a really steep price tag. I'd like to have OSX, and I'd also enjoy the out-of-the box applications, but for the cost difference, I could load up a Windows machine.

I'm using MS Office programs, and I'd like to do basic photo/video editing. I figure I could get a comparable Windows laptop for $1200 or so, but I wouldn't have decent video software without spending a few hundred dollars on software.

Yeah, I mean that's totally apples to apples. So you're comparing buying a new machine with the OS already installed (with the drivers pre-installed) to putting a new OS on an old machine. Jesus H.

Linux is great if you are a "netbookish" user or a power user. Or you can get computers with Ubuntu already installed with support and that would the way to go if you're not one of those. That's more of an apples to apples comparison. I would never recommend a new install of the OS on hardware optimized for a different OS for the "average" user.

That said if you have the cash and need to the power get the Mac.
