65-60-3, Bielema's was 37-19. I guess you need to add that Bielema inherited a better program. Not trying to make a point here, just edifying.

Barry's career as a coach is oddly similar to Kirk's through 14 years, except for the fact that he coached Wisconsin to 3 Rose Bowls.

I was surprised to find out that Barry is only 66 (he's 65 but will be 66 by the bowl). He retired pretty young (he was 58 when he announced, Kirk is 57). He always looked way older. |

Barry Alvarez (1990-2003):
Overall record was 99-67-4 (54-55-3 in the Big Ten), 3 BCS Bowls (all victories) with an 7-2 bowl record, and 5 seasons with a sub-.500 regular season record. Kirk Ferentz (1999-2012): Overall record is 100-74 (59-52 in the Big Ten), 2 BCS Bowls (winning 1) with a 6-4 bowl record, and 4 seasons with a sub-.500 record.

BBK - who would you rather have as a coach - Barry Alvarez or Kirk Ferentz?

i know injuries happen, but Kirk was a lock for another title and probably the rose bowl until stanzi got hurt on a freak play in 2009.
that has nothing to do with coaching ability.

they would have earned a share of the B10 title with a win over Northwestern (assuming they still beat Minnesota), but the Rose Bowl doesn't happen without winning at OSU. Vandy wasn't the problem that game, the defense + Stross and Murray lost that game, so I'm not convinced that Iowa wins that with Stanzi unless the game largely unfolds the same way and Ferentz doesn't puss out with 45 seconds left needing just 35 yards to win.

how in the FUCK can you say that losing your starting QB was not the problem in that game?

Because that was the only game of Vandenberg's career where he played as well as Stanzi would have played in the same situation.

I think that play is a great example of coaching ability. The fucking TE that was supposed to block Wooten, didn't. Instead he ran a route to no where.

Just stop fucking talking about football. You hate Iowa's coaches, it's noted, now stop typing about it.

Absolutely Bielema inherited a better program. Wisconsin was horrible in the 1970s and 1980s. I think Barry was winless his first season, won 1 or 2 games his 2nd season and then that was it. Camp Randall was no where near a sell out like it is now.

Funny thing about sellouts; no one had seemed to have them in the 70s. Check out some of these attendance figures: http://www.totalfootballstats.com/Te...88&Season=1972 |

I can still remember the 81 game as a big deal because it was on ABC regional TV, in the days when Iowa was hardly ever on the tube. And I think McClain was still the coach in 84 for that brutal 10-10 game at Kinnick--really set their program back when McClain died, although I'm not sure he ever would have gotten them over the hump the way Alvarez did. Don Morton was the Frank Lauterbur of Wisky football. Guess the stadium there was only half full most of the time, hard to believe--we did have that long almost 20 yr streak where they didn't beat us. And now I''m remembering that 13-10 loss in 97 to break the streak.....grrrrrr.... |

Yeah, Lime. You "really harp on the Rose Bowl thing," much like Doug "kind of gets angry sometimes."
It's a fucking stupid argument. Absolutely brutally stupid. Stop using it.
