That makes sense. Obviously living in La Porte I know most if not all of these people, as I know some others on here do. You're assessment of Scheel is correct. He is a great kid.

Questionable arm strength DG?

questionable in terms of an all-conference type QB that can make big throws maybe. its definitely serviceable. seemed to have a slowish delivery from what Ive seen, but that could just be bad habits from high school type stuff.

I've seen all but maybe three games he's played since he became QB last year. Coming into the year I would have said there is no question with his arm strength. This year there was a couple times on deep throws that I questioned his strength. Objectively, I would say that his arm strenghth is above-average at the college level. I think he has the strength to make all the throws in Iowa's system. His biggest assets are his field vision, accuracy and mobility. He is a very accurate passer with good touch on short and intermediate throws.

The other thing is that I know he was at a camp last summer with many of the top quarterbacks in the midwest. He rated out as the top passer at that camp, and that was with a bum shoulder.

"Arm strength" is often overrated. How is his release?

No problems with release. Quick release.

Big deal. I can make all the throws in Iowa's system and I'm old. It doesn't take much to throw the ball to the sideline.

i think you are underestimating the combination of arm strength and release speed that it takes to get the ball from the pocket to a square on the sideline before the defender gets there.

Multiple Big Ten coaches have offered him early as a junior as a quarterback. Oregon is in regular contact with him. One Big Ten coach has told him he is the number 1 guy on their board. I think that speaks pretty high about any concerns people who get paid to assess arm strength think about him.

I remember being told by one Union's coaches after the Maquoketa game last year that Maq's coaches stated that Scheel is more advanced than Rosenfels was at the same point in their career. I know that with my untrained eye I have never seen a high school player with Scheel's skill set. Granted, that is a limited sample size, but you still know something special when you see it. I admit that I am biased, but I have felt since he was a sophomore that he was a high BCS level quarterback. I think he would be a very good QB at Iowa or any other BCS AQ conference school.

Can anyone confirm or say definitively that Iowa is even recruiting him as a QB?
Has he, himself said anything on it?

Based on what I know if it were up to him he would likely choose receiver, but he is still up in the air on this.

That seems to be the vibe for his long term prospects as well, correct.

I saw maybe 3 minutes worth of "highlights" and thought to myself that he should be used in multiple ways. Looks like a fantastic athlete.

What are the odds on him being a Hawkeye? 60-40 yes?

All I'm saying is that there aren't that many patterns in Iowa's (Greg Davis') offense. I'm not underestimating anything. I'm trying, badly, to comment on Davis' offense. It's not going to work well no matter what kids Iowa gets.

We had some people up from Athens, GA over Christmas. They've seen first hand what Greg Davis' passing offense is. They told me to just get used to it.

One game does not make a QB. Yeah, they did mention that but it was for a bowl game. I suspect Georgia was a pretty good running team in that era if history of Georgia football is any indication. Davis was the passing game coordinator. I think they probably do a lot more passing under Richt now.

They also mentioned that I wasn't wearing the Georgia shirt they had gave me previously. I told them to get me an Autographed Vince Dooley football and I will wear Georgia gear the next time they come up. Ha.

No one is going to come to Iowa to play now. The program is stale.

So far they have two kids that have grown up as life-long Iowa fans. Lets see how they do with the general population.

True but you need to keep the homegrown talent such as it is at Iowa. Now we wait to see if they actually sign. A decent year would help.

So do I.
Multiple Big Ten coaches have offered him early as a junior as a quarterback. Oregon is in regular contact with him. One Big Ten coach has told him he is the number 1 guy on their board. I think that speaks pretty high about any concerns people who get paid to assess arm strength think about him.
This (and more) was true about JC, btw

We can argue all day about recruiting being a crap shoot. It is. The point is we outrecruited big time schools for this kid, instate or not. I was told this would never happen again because the program is "stale".

I really want a mobile QB. Hopefully this kid can stick there.

"Union football coach Joe Hadachek just texted me to confirm that QB Jay Scheel has committed to Iowa. Says Scheel will play QB for Hawks."

From some guy named Jesse Gavin on twitter, his info says he is a sports broadcaster and was retweeted by Moorehouse, so it seems legit.

Yeah me too. Forcing the defense to account for the QB as a runner is such a big schematic advantage that I think it's kind of crazy not to try to go that route unless you're overflowing with talent elsewhere like Alabama or USC. And, as awful as Davis was last year, he has designed offenses around a mobile QB before. I'm not confident in Ferentz actually committing to the idea though, so I'd guess they let him try it for a few weeks and then move him to receiver (which will be all the easier since he's apparently totally fine with playing WR).

This is accurate. He's going in as a QB.
