A clearly disgruntled Wilson remaining on the staff is malpractice, btw.

Question: if they challenged the OC, were told to back off and didn't, how do you keep them?
Loyalty is one thing. Insubordination is another. Any other job they'd be fired. |

Here's a fun link from Deadspin with all those who applied for the Wisconsin coaching job.
Brian D Career job title: "Financial Analyst" Current salary: "$48,000/yr" Desired salary: "$50,000/yr" I have no football coaching experience at any level. It would be a huge mistake to hire me for this position. Thank you for your consideration. |

Should we be concerned that there is only ONE opening?
Trying to get thru signing day first kinda thing, then list the other(s)?

And it seems logical Wilson would be feeling a little disenchanted with his position and place in the program - he got no consideration for the DC job and got moved to a position coach role where he had both Tanner Miller and Tom Donatell serving as starters on a BCS football team. |

Do you honestly think KF would keep a coach that was so disenchanted with his job that it would affect his ability to coach?

I have a hard time thinking that KF would not be able to make the distinction between that and a guy that is so pissed off about his situation that he's not going to be as a good of a coach as he could be. I think KF's loyalties stretch pretty far but not that far. |

Part of me admittedly sees Wilson's widely believed disillusionment and interest leaving as a great pretext to get rid of a bad coach, if nothing else. It's not like I'd want to keep him even if it was clear he was 100% on board. I just think there's decent reason to believe he isn't, which makes keeping him all the more indefensible.

Yes. I think he would keep a coach who is there because he wants to but cannot find an equal or better job elsewhere, which is another way of saying the same thing.
If Wilson came right out and announced to the press that he hates his job and wishes he could find a different one, then KF might can him, but that isn't going to happen, and I don't think KF would outright fire him based upon inference. Rather, if Wilson doesn't find another job, KF will let him return, perhaps indefinitely. Last edited by Gushawk; 01-24-2013 at 05:34 PM. |

In some ways Kirk reminds me of a police chief I worked under once upon a time. He promoted incompetents, because he thought they be so happy to have their positions they'd never challenge him or look for another position.

When Soup was hired, he promised Ferentz that he would bring in big time talent like he did at Michigan and develop them into the Braylon Edwards mold. While he struck gold with DJK and McNutt, he came up empty with pretty much everyone else. And thus, these high hopes ultimately drew disappointment unto Ferentz, so the relationship between Campbell and Ferentz grew sour. Campbell left because he was pissed that he didn't get the OC job here at Iowa. Since Davis' hiring, Campbell was not a fan of Davis' system and Davis was not a fan of Soup's possession receivers.

Good luck to Greg Davis in upgrading our receiver talent to the point required for his offense to be successful before he is asked to leave, perhaps along with the head coach he serves.

You would think Erb is absolutely gone. He wasn't at Junior day and Woods/Johnson were recruiting in his area.
I would be surprised if Wilson is gone as he has been out recruiting, but it would make a lot of sense given he has all the ties to New Jersey/Maryland.

Wilson was also the Head Coach of a high school in Camden, New Jersey for 7 years and RB coach for Rutgers in 1999. He is an East Coast guy when it comes down to it.
That is a lot of smoke there for someone to pull out of their ass.

The hope is last year was just a horrible outlier and somehow getting a few of the older and disgruntled coaches out of the picture with some new coaches who are familiar with the Offense will be cause for hope.
I am not seeing it as I think Greg Davis is awful without elite talent running his system, but it really can't get any worse than it was. The only coaches from the "old" regime if this goes down would be Phil Parker and Reese Morgan, and Morgan was likely the best coach last year along with Brian Ferentz. It would be halfway exciting to see a new WR, RB, DB, and TE coach this year.

Meh. We'll likely hire the Bobby Kennedy of RB coaches to replace Erb.
I hope they hire someone to replace Wilson with enough balls to say no to more Tanner Miler, but am realistic about the odds of that happening. |

marcmorehouse @marcmorehouse
On whether or not KF expects any more staff changes: "We're just moving forward here and we'll see what the next couple of weeks bring." That sounds like a yes to me

While not that big of Greg Davis fan, it is hard to say now that he was the one causing problems at Texas. They have not been setting it on fire since he left.

I think that it is a very good possibility. They obviously held this off until after signing day and knew it was coming, so I would bet that they give a current Defensive coach on the staff a promotion and Wilson takes over that spot.

if Wilson and Erb leave it's actually conceivable that Iowa's specials teams aren't entirely awful.
