Default Big Ten going to 9 or 10 game schedule in 2014

It looks like a done deal and Delaney seems to be pushing for 10 games.

Gonna be a fucking nightmare. None of this shit happening is good for Iowa.

The only good thing is this might kill the Iowa State game by 2014.

This is a definite isolationist policy. It will be good for revenue, but it seems like they have resigned their national hopes on hoping Ohio State or Michigan can get through unscathed, but that is going to be really hard.

Gotta win at least 5 Big Ten games to get to 7 wins now.

Iowa fell just three games short of that this past season.

No shit, and it is going to make it all that much harder.

The only way this works out for Iowa at all is if the Big Ten goes a true East / West and the Western division looks like this:

Iowa
Northwestern
Illinois
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Nebraska
Purdue

That division and then lucking out and getting your 2 cross games as Indiana and Maryland wouldn't be too bad.

If the West division looked like that it wouldn't be too bad for the Hawks. They might be able to contend in that division every 3-5 years.

I like it, and can't wait for ISU fans to start crying and begging for the legislature to intervene.

9 game schedule makes no sense so they have to be going to a 10 game schedule. I think they'll also go to a 13 game schedule. They've already extended the season a week to Thanksgiving so they have room for 13 games and 1 bye week. The ISU game could still survive with a 13 game schedule.

Even at nine games, the call to Ames should be short.

The game will only be played in Iowa City with ISU receiving a standard game check. Otherwise, it was terrible while it lasted. Have a nice life.

Does it make Iowa's home schedule even worse? It seems like the last couple of years have been terrible in terms of home games. At least ISU was a guaranteed good game (if you call last year's game that).

It probably won't happen at nine games. The series is dead unless ISU agrees to exactly that, with a ten game schedule.

They might end the series or scale it back. But it would be by mutual agreement, no one at UI has the moxie to make those kinds of demands. ISU is already playing 9 conference games and might be agreeable to some other arrangement.

At ten games it is an imperative. Iowa needs seven home games. With five league road games, in a tent game schedule, both out of conference games MUST be at home.

LOL. Yes, ISU is in the power position, so whether or not they are "agreeable to some other arrangement" is the endgame here.

You're off your rocker.

As someone else said, they have to be assuming a 13 game regular season is coming if they go to a 10 game conf schedule. If not, Iowa (and every other big ten team) is never going to play a meaningful out of conference game again under your scenario. There is simply no room for any home and home for anyone without giving up a home game every year.

They're also looking at increasing (from zero) then number of November night games. A really smart move, imo. Also, league play could start as early as week 1.

i wouldnt say that the 2 games have to be at home, but they sure as hell cant be on the road. if arrowhead wants to pay us shitload to play ISU in KC, i would be open to that, but i would rather play KSU or oklahoma.

Both good ideas. Starting conference play early is what the SEC does, and it's a smart move. That way you can sprinkle crappy competition throughout your conference schedule, which essentially allows for extra bye weeks. Well, unless your Iowa and you find it difficult to defeat MAC schools, then you're just screwed.

I wouldn't blame Iowa for dropping it altogether or renegotiating the format. I just don't think Iowa's in a position to dictate the terms given current politics.

Iowa is absolutely in power to dictate it, because they're the ones who fund the game.

My guess is that "politics" = University of Iowa being somewhat rudderless/spineless at the moment.

10 Big10 games plus Iowa State and NW Nowhere St would work.

As long as the game is only in Iowa City, yes.

Luther thinks Iowa is not in the position to make that the case, though. Because, you know, politics.

The Big Ten doing this is a pussy move. May be good for revenue, but it is terrible for everyone except Michigan and Ohio State. Eff Delaney, stupid POS.

With the way things are going, I would bet that the players at the 5 major conferences are getting paid in the next 5 years.

5-8 sounds awesome.
Almost bowl eligible.
Don't worry, we have Greg Davis.

there is no fucking way that only football players are getting paid.

i understand that various entities want to maximize revenue, but this is the beginning of the end for university-sponsored football if they continue down this path. and call me fucking crazy, but i would like the hawkeyes to actually be associated with the university of iowa.

You guys are getting a little carried away. First, OSU is going to split from the conference and now players are going to get paid?

Why would a university pay their players? What leverage do the players have? Are they going to unionize? Go on strike?
