I didn't want to clutter up the 2014 Recruiting thread with this, but today Clifton Garrett posted a pic of 54 hand written letters he received from Ole' Miss. Scattered in the pic was a single lonely envelope from Iowa.
This is just the start of the DEFCON 1 level of stupidity about to take place in College Football. Here is an article in the Austin American Statesman from Saturday on how Texas should and likely will set up their recruiting moving forward. I sat there shaking my head. If people thought there was a recruiting disparity before in college, it is about to get a whole lot bigger, absurd and more expensive. This article advocates adding roughly 15-20 people to the payroll at a cost of at least a couple million dollars per year. Quote:

They will and they are Jimmie. Every single SEC team will set up a department like this. 20 employees working around the clock to shove as much shit down recruits throats.
I would also imagine Texas, Oklahoma, Oregon, USC, Washington, Notre Dame, Ohio State, perhaps Michigan and others will follow along with something similar. There will be schools and coaches who don't and some lower level schools that will go all in on this in an attempt to even the field. Illinois would be the type of school and coach that I could see setting up an SEC style war room for recruiting. My guess is that Iowa will add a few more lower level personnel, interns and work study kids to help out, but they will for the most part stay the same.

I really hope he isn't and won't. There really isn't any need for him to, it isn't like Iowa is suddenly going to start pulling in recruits much above what they already do or have in the past.
Watching the fake celebrations on signing day was sickening. I would rather go 7-5 every year than sell out to that bullshit.

There are also going to be kids that teams like Ole' Miss completely turn off by doing this.

"Change the Perception" paragraph was interesting. Think there is anything like that floating around the Iowa athletic department?

1. SEC, OSU, ND, USC, Oregon, Texas, Oklahoma, OKST, Nebraska, Florida State, Miami, Clemson, UCLA with random lower level teams like Illinois, Washington, Arizona, North Carolina the spend tons of money to keep up and are succesful random years 2. Rest of the Big Ten, Pac 12, Big 12, ACC 3. Everyone else I wonder if the NCAA did this as a way to appease the super powers so they won't break off and form their own league with the Top 4-5 conferences.

The thing that makes sense to me is the "director of personnel" type role. I think that's a fantastic idea.

How long would OSU, Michigan and Nebraska put up with disparity? Could they leave?

Ohio St isn't just going to willingly let their football program become second tier, which is what is going to happen with these rules because there is zero fucking chance the Big Ten adopts them. They'll leave the Big Ten before they allow their fball program to become second rate/tier. Same for Michigan, Nebraska.

They want the status quo. This is step one/option one. What happens if that doesn't happen(it won't)? Am I supposed to believe that OSU will willingly allow their football program to remain in a league that will no longer compete for championships on a national level? If the Big Ten "opts out" of these rules and operates under stricter rules they effectively opt out of tier one athletics. You obviously have a higher regard for The Ohio State University than I because I see no fucking way that happens.

I don't think anyone is saying that college football is deciding to move on from the Big Ten as much as it is the Big Ten deciding if it wants to operate under the coming rules. If the Big Ten won't/doesn't & everyone else does, that's the scenario I'm talking about. Apparently ALL conferences had previously approved these changes, including the schizophrenic Big Ten. So its not out of left field to think that the potential is there for the scenario I'm describing.

Nebraska doesn't have time to worry about this. They're busy petitioning the Big Ten to change the Black Friday game.

It would be cool if Barta was marginally competent and we could make jingoistic "This is Barta!" gifs.

In terms of adding a scouting department to the staff, what's the big deal? It's not as if Iowa couldn't afford to add to their payroll and I'm sure the coaches would love to focus more on player development than recruiting. |

Why do we continue to pretend that college athletics - at least hoops and football - isn't a big business? It isn't going to change and playing the martyr isn't going to make your Iowa degree any shinier. Conference expansion, camps, conference-owned TV networks, tournaments, ridiculously paid coaches (see Ferentz, Kirk), etc. - drawing a line the sand at scouting staffs and lame signing day "press conferences" seems odd. |
