What's really the point of contention here? That Ole Miss sent a bunch of letters to a kid? That's been going on for decades. Or is it that some schools may employ scouting staffs? Again, who cares as long as it's within the rules? Frankly, Iowa's coaching staff would probably love to focus more on coaching/player development than recruiting and they could easily afford it.

Why do we continue to pretend that college athletics - at least hoops and football - isn't a big business? It isn't going to change and playing the martyr isn't going to make your Iowa degree any shinier. Conference expansion, camps, conference-owned TV networks, tournaments, ridiculously paid coaches (see Ferentz, Kirk), etc. - drawing a line the sand at scouting staffs and lame signing day "press conferences" seems odd.
This is the whole point, there essentially won't be any more rules or anyone watching.
Question: are the rules for the SEC and Big Ten markedly different? As I recall, the Big Ten has much more stringent rules with regards to over-signing than does the SEC. Are there other inequities between the two?

The NCAA should intervene and attempt to level the playing field a bit. The NCAA pays lip service to the concept of the 'student athlete' and then permits the SEC to treat the players that don't live up to their potential as commodities.

But short of a uniform policy across all conferences, the SEC has a built-in advantage that extends beyond a geographical one. I have a bigger issue with over-signing than teams adding recruiting personnel. The former is an affront to the notion of the student-athlete while the latter is really just a shift in responsibilities and an expansion of the staff. Sure, the smaller schools with more limited resources may suffer, but that's always been the case.

generally speaking, big ten recruits must be able to spell their own name correctly.

Mr. James Delany tried and failed for over a decade to get legislation enacted limiting/restricting oversigning.

It appears that all of the rule changes are going to be reconsidered or overridden.

@JFowlerCBS: Head coach told me he heard from SEC school that's hiring staffers to do 1 thing: Text top recruits 100-150 times per day.
That would annoy the piss out me and ensure that I don't go to that school.

In case anyone was wondering...

Tennessee sends recruit 102 letters in one day, three off Nick Saban's pace

It appears Tennessee first-year head coach Butch Jones is getting the hang of this SEC recruiting thing.

On Monday, Stanton Truitt of Monroe, Ga., had a mailbox full of letters. As it turns out, they all came from the same sender.

"When I went to open it, it would not budge," Truitt told ESPN.com of his mailbox. "I pulled it down, and then some of the letters were hanging out, but they were all tied together by a rubber band.

"I was thinking there was no way these came from the same school. But I kept pulling on them and I thought the mailbox was going to break, but when I got them out I found out that all 102 of them were from Tennessee! It was crazy."

This is nothing new in the SEC.

Nick Saban sent 105 letters last year to Alvin Kamara, who at the time had no favorites.
In Oxford, Ole Miss' recruitment of Laremy Tunsil included 800 Facebook messages.

Both the Crimson Tide and the Rebels got their guys.

Truitt has offers from 19 schools, including SEC schools Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Arkansas, according to 247Sports.

He told ESPN the most letters he had received at one time was 12 from Vanderbilt and 10 from West Virginia.

"It was shocking and it shows me that they think highly of me and really love me," Truitt said. "It makes me feel important to them and makes me want to work harder and keep doing what I have been doing."

Truitt said that the letters were inspirational, and each letter would say something different like "Stanton we love you," "VolNation," or "Come be a Vol Stanley."

Truitt had 1,420 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns, averaging 10.5 yards a carry last year. Tennessee, according to the report, is recruiting Truitt as a slot receiver and as a cornerback.
