Default The danger of deeply conservative religious beliefs

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010...es-iran-cleric

"Many women who do not dress modestly ... lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which increases earthquakes," Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi was quoted as saying by Iranian media.

This reminds me of Falwell's comments, and Robertson's. Virtually the same inalterable beliefs, different hemisphere.

Truly frightening rhetoric. How is the world going to handle the the wrath of chicks and fags?

Don't forget to add John Piper to your list, too.

Does superstition include unicorns and magical rainbows?

Though he is wrong on only the last fragment, what is so dangerous about it?

It is a severe defect of the mind that often provokes unnecessary actions. That's a dangerous leap.

Does that picture have anything to do with the fear it was causing earthquakes? No.

What's been far more devastating on society is the sexual revolution, by a factor of millions.

"Deeply conservative religious beliefs" like mine would have saved many of the 50,000,000 American babies aborted due to unbridled sexuality, and prevented countless STD deaths.

That picture has everything to do with that howler of a quote on man-made earthquakes. Both lines of thinking are cut from the same cloth.

And with all due respect, I don't think abstinence and sexual responsibility are solely the province of religious conservatives. There are of course many positives that accompany such fanatical devotion, but it can be easily manipulated to cause harm as well. Hence the subject of my post.

Should we have a thread on the danger of shallow thinking regarding large issues?

You mean overreacting, like you're doing?
