10 years? That's risky. I wonder what a buyout would cost Iowa.

I guess anything could happen, but I imagine if it got to a certain point and it was that bad, Kirk would leave and take an NFL job.

Also, it is a huge recruiting tool to be able to show a kid "hey, I've been here 12 years so far and I am signed for another 10. I WILL be your coach for your entire career."

Except, of course, every time the NFL rumors come up. I'm quite sure that KF can leave whenever he wants under the extension.

Might as well just make it a lifetime contract. Ferentz will be our coach for as long as he wants to be.

70,000 seats x $60/seat x 7 games = $29.4M of ticket revenue. Now add to that revenue from bowl games, donations to the athletic department, etc., etc. It isn't absurd to think that Iowa's athletic program could lose $10M per year between where it is now and where it would be if a middling Ferentz replacement were at the helm.

This tells me that Ferentz is pleased with where the Big 10 is going. If he had concerns about the future of the conference or the new division set up, he might not have gone for an extension right now.

Been chewing on this one for a while now.
Honest question - outside of Hayden bringing back a door mat into respectability, when will it be ok to start talking about KF in the same manner as we do HF? Hayden gets the nod now for reviving the team, the scrambled eggs hat, the white pants after labor day, and that mean mother trucking moustache. But I gotta say, KF is getting really close as far as resume. He's won the big game (OB), he's taken the teams almost as high at HF (how many #8s now at end of season? 3-4?), and his tenure is going to be longer than loog or Delaney. Hayden had the #1 vs #2 team win, and I'll always love him, but I gotta say that KF is going to surpass Mr. Hokey Pokey, and it may be this season.

If we win out and get fucked out of the rose, I think we as a collective fan base, should go to the BCS and take a shit on their doorstep.
I'll even eat a combo of Mexican and Indian food mixed with fiber pills for the event.

I don't think the Rose has trouble selling tickets no matter who is playing. I don't have attendance figures, but I don't ever remember seeing many empty seats for a bowl game.

Number of Rose Bowl appearances/wins isn't as meaningful of a metric anymore in the BCS-era.
Fry gets a lot of credit for reviving the program, and that can't be overstated. But Ferentz's resume looks awfully good next to Fry's, and he's still got a ways to go. |

I consider an Orange Bowl appearance the equivalent of a Rose Bowl appearance on the national stage, but the Rose will always have a bigger place in my heart. The fact that we finally won the 'big' game last year should have dividends. Today's kids, for the most part, won't feel the same as us old timers do about the Rose. I just hope we don't end up with a Citiboyz Inc Part II.

Of course going to the Rose bowl still matters. But you can't use the appearance as a metric in a period where another bowl has the option of selecting the Big 10 champ before the Rose Bowl does (see 2002). Hayden has 3 Rose Bowl appearances, Kirk has 2 BCS bowl appearances. |

the problem with KF's regime is that he has never been the "Big dog" in the Big Ten. Although conference co-champions for two years, Iowa was not the premier team in the conference. HF had one year where his team was clearly the best.

Their resumes are actually pretty similar right now.
Right now, the main difference is Fry's longevity, and his lack of a truly awful year (Kirk's 1-11). Kirk's high end years are better than Fry's, and with anything other than a catastrophe this year he should surpass him in win%. Last edited by MikeyJoe; 09-03-2010 at 03:38 PM. |

Couple of thoughts:
1) KF could surpass HF, but hasn't yet 2) While we all understand that the term "January bowl" means little anymore, I'd go so far as to say that it is dangerous to compare "BCS bowl" for KF to "Rose Bowl" for HF. They really aren't equivalent in terms of difficulty to achieve, although they are probably the best thing to compare other than perhaps Big Ten championships. 3) Evy is underrated |

If you could expound, what would it take for you to say he has? Other than the accumulation of things that come with longevity, when it comes to the rate at which he achieves certain things he's already surpassed Fry.

Longevity related accomplishments Resurrecting the program from nothingness Assistant coaches ("Coaching tree") As far as pure win-loss team accomplishments, it's probably a draw right now. With the notable exception of KF's record versus Iowa State. Another couple of quality seasons (say, 9 or 10 wins), or a national title game, and KF surpasses HF in my mind. Assuming he stays, it's only a matter of time. |

Assuming he stays? He is guaranteed to be here at least 3 more years at a minimum. There is no way he leaves while James is starting and playing. Isn't the youngest son pretty good at City High?
Fry and Ferentz are both legends at this point, but Kirk will go down as the greatest.
