Default Marvin McNutt is good at football

Only three Big Ten players since 1996 have had eight 100-yard receiving games in a single season:

1998 David Boston, Ohio State
2001 Lee Evans, Wisconsin
2011 Marvin McNutt, Iowa

He is currently sitting outside the top ten for most receiving yards in a single season in Big Ten history (by 20 yards). If he gets 100 yards in each of the next two games (Nebraska and bowl game) that would put him at 1,440, which would be the third most all-time.

Even if he only was able to get 100 yards total over the next two games, he would be around fifth or sixth most all-time for a single season.

And his 28 career touchdown catches are the tenth most all-time in Big Ten history.

And one last thing for tonight. Vandenberg needs 376 more passing yards to reach 3,000 yards on the season. The only Big Ten teams to have a 3000-passer, 1000-rusher and 1000-receiver in the same season since 1996:

1998 Ohio State (Joe Germaine, Michael Wiley, David Boston)
2003 Michigan (John Navarre, Chris Perry, Braylon Edwards)

It's funny how some retards here still think that Vandy and Coker aren't very good.

While I agree with you, big statistics don't necessarily mean players are good.

Coker is good when used the right way and Vandy is continuing to get better.

Only way mcnutts records are broken in the near future is if we move to more of a spread style offense, imo

Brant may have a point here as crazy as it sounds. Martin-Manley already has 28 catches this year as a Freshman and should end up with around 35 on the year.

He would only need to average right around 50 receptions per year for his last 3 years to have a chance to pass McNutt. Not completely unreasonable to think that could happen given that Vandenberg likes to use him often on his shorter routes. Rudock will likely do the same.

I don't think this will happen, but getting that many receptions as a Freshman help.

true but I also expect next year that you will get more catches out of the TE and (hopefully) RB positions.

I agree.

The more you look at things, the more confident and hopeful 2012 looks as this season ends. You have some pretty good things occurring. Sure, you lose McNutt and that will hurt on any level, but it appears the the following is happening or has happened:

1. The light switch came on for CJ Fed and he appears to be breaking out in a huge way. Ray Hamilton will also be a big factor next year and is another good pass catching and blocking tight end with huge talent.
2. Davis and Martin-Manley have shown they are more than capable of making plays and continue to improve. Grant looked good in limited time.
3. Running Backs / Split out options look good with McCall, Canzeri and even Bullock
4. Vandenberg will continue to improve and I think our guard play will be better next year.

I was told McNutt would struggle without DJK on the other side.

I don't think it's right to constantly throw things in the face of a poster who happens to be wrong about something.

thats not what I said, but it was good for a giggle. He did struggle to get open in the Orange Bowl after Koulianos got hurt but he is slimmer, faster and better now. There's no doubt hes Iowas greatest receiver.

curiously, some scouts say his ability to separate from fast CBs could be an issue according to some of the draft previews Ive read. He wont be getting covered by white guys from Indiana in the NFL. I think he could have a decent career as a 4th or 3rd wr on an NFL team.

I can see why. Only 3 B10 receivers with 8 100 yd games in a season? LOL

Link?

Not saying you're wrong, but have not read that any of the draft sites I've seen.

he looks fast enough to me. when teams are looking for a #1 they want the full package but he has enough tools to be an NFL #2 or #3 if he runs in the 4.5's and fixes his drop issues.

My only criticism of McNutt is that he seems to be dropping more passes this year -- particularly passes that should be caught when he is wide open.

With that being said, he has been one of my favorite Iowa players to watch in recent history. Some of the catches he makes are down right freakish.
