Default Keep or fire Kirk?

If you were Barta for a day, what would you do?

I would keep him because of the financial hit of firing him. However, I may fire his assistants and perhaps he would quit.

Gary Barta will not do that though, because Barta wants Kirk there.

This.

2/3 of the assistants are cleaning their offices. Brian included.

Keep with "you fire him or I will" ultimatum regarding Davis at minimum. Don't love Parker either, but I don't feel his unit is underperforming quite badly enough for ultimatum this year. Maybe next.

I know it doesn't answer the question asked, but the best case scenario is that he leaves for some type of NFL job of his own volition. Things suck right now and it doesn't look good going forward, but on the other hand, Kirk has done some great things here and I don't want his tenure to end with a firing. It wouldn't be right. We ought to be having regular Kirk Ferentz appreciation days at Kinnick in the 2020's to commemorate anniversaries of his great teams, and that won't be happening if he's fired.

Just wait and hope that he gets the opportunity to try his hand at Sundays one more time and it's an opportunity he can't refuse. It'd be the best thing for everybody, and I hope it happens sooner than later.

Barta should REALLY REALLY encourage KF to take an NFL job. Let's hope that NFL people are still that stupid.

I am not an NFL guy, but it seems from my perspective that they use an entirely different type of analysis when hiring coaches. Consistent success at the college level does not appear to be a prerequisite.

If Greg Schiano can get a head coaching job in the league, and half of these retread morons can continuously be brought back, then Kirk certainly can too. Seriously, google "list of current NFL head coaches". It's a veritable Who's Who of morons.

LOL at the thought of Kirk as an NFL coach.

I'd pay to see the press conferences after a drubbing.

For the record, I fully agree with you on his prospective performance. I'm talking about getting hired. I have little doubt he could get a job.

I think that an NFL coach has to be a detail freak who is willing to kill himself and demand his assistants kill themselves as well.

Kirk can't stomach the thought of asking his OC and DC to actually recruit.

Kirk would be an awful NFL coach. Just terrible.

He has no fire. You don't take a burned out college coach who's just going through the same motions he has for 14 years, despite it not working, and hire him to be an NFL coach.

he could get an nfl gig, just not as a head coach. You cant fire him. make him fire a couple assistants and maybe he quits.

hes the poster child of 'loyal to a fault."

Given what it was before he got there, maybe.

I also don't think he'll last.

Speaking of TB, I'd take Raheem Morris.

Probably helps that he was 44 or so.

Kirk's pushing 60 and doesn't understand time.

Perhaps, but the pundits are also convinced that Iowa isn't a good job. Ferentz has worked miracles at Iowa, supposedly.

If Kirk has any suspicion - and I'm guessing he does - that next year is going to be bad, then he should offer his resignation.

I think that Iowa needs to spend 200% more per win, than any other school in the big 10, minus Northwestern. If I'm not mistaken, Iowa is the 2nd smallest school, and lets face it, we have shit to recruit from. Look at the size and the money difference. when Bump decided to reward Hayden, he set a new precedent. We need to keep doing that, or it will be a fall to the bottom that we may never get out of. Some may say we hit bottom, but I disagree until we are there for a few years.

I voted fire although the prospect of a new coach scares me. I feel we could find ourselves a new lickliter

I'd rather have him change his approach and hire some coordinators that don't suck and call their own style

If they paid a new coach what KF is making, they could get a great hire.

I don't think they even paid Fran what Lick was making.

Nor did they pay KF what HF was making.

It all depends on the direction they want to go.

Hire an unproven guy (like KF)or go after a proven guy. I think Iowa got lucky with KF, and it might not work out so well next time.

I'm not against hiring a scumbag for a coach, like Petrino.

If I am Barta, I am not really thinking about attempting a buyout or scenario of "firing" Kirk...yet. However, I think he should have a heart to heart about the retention of Greg Davis.
