We have enough quickness issues without being bulky. Fran has his style and it mostly works. I for one appreciate his quest to play basketball like it was meant to be played and not to give it to the big ten thug ball model. It’s paid dividends for us under him, even if we occasionally look overwhelmed.

well, to get nerdy about it, it depends on the number of type iia muscle fibers. a kid with a lot of fast twitch iia can gain bulk, and it increases explosiveness and speed. guy with a lot of iib fibers, those are more glycolytic than alactic (think the 400 and 800m rather than the 100 and 200), and the bulk doesn't make the kid faster -- it can help them with fatigue resistance, the ability to repeat what speed they have over and over, but it won't make them significantly quicker.

slow twitch guy? ain't nothin' helping that boy. better hope he's skilled and understands where to be in the defense....

tl;dr -- bulk helps some guys and doesn't help others

Does our team look like a nice collection of fast twitch?

We aren’t going to look like MSU without getting slower and getting worse at shooting. That’s a fact.

I, for one, am glad we now have ‘a’ fast twitch guy, and I hope he complements the other players.

well, a lot of those guys are probably 65-70% fast twitch, but iib fibers, not iia. hell, larry bird had a 28-inch vertical -- that's pretty fast-twitch (go find a two-miler who can do that...and good luck).

a lot of iib...

Not only is that not "a fact". It's incredibly stupid and wrong.

I don’t know. I hated lifting weight in high school and was a relatively slow skinny pussy, and then I started lifting weights in college and became a considerably buffer, faster pussy. I doubt I’m full of iia fast twitch fiber.

you went from no stimulus of your ft fibers to some stimulus. so yes, you got faster.

fran's kids are doing some plyometrics, some weights, some sprints -- so they're getting some stimulus. the question would be whether additional stimulus would result in more of the adaptations you'd want for basketball.

it would be nice if fran found his doyle -- none of his slower guys is ever going to turn into brent barry, but they probably could gain some functional mass that would translate into better performance on the court. but, it's not like no attempt is being made at all....

But Basabe Derpity Derp Derp. TBH both sides piss me off in this debate. As much as I hate Lwade's argument, I also hate the guy that thinks Jordan bohannon can spend a few more hours in the weight room so that he is somehow not the shortest, weakest, slowest player on the court. Sometimes you just have to accept a guys natural limitations. Like Shap said there is always a trade off at Iowa.

Fran could probably do a little better job of recruiting guys with different strengths and weaknesses. But that's what is exciting about this year. I can't wait to see Toussaint surrounded by all the skill.

You can choose to believe me or you can choose to believe that the coach who sits down the hall from the other coach who has the best strength program in the country for his sport is choosing to blatantly ignore physiology and the feedback of a highly compensated strength coach. Suit yourself.

I think bohannon is going to play this season. He is working out with the team a bunch and acting like he is going to be ready.

This would have been nice. 6,000 students seems optimistic though.

Students started with bleachers right behind the basket, easily close enough to heckle. Randy Breuer and Granville Waiters were not pleased.

6000 students wasn’t overly-optimistic at the time.

No freshmen could get basketball tickets my first year on campus. It was a thing.

It’s before my time so I’ll take your word for it, but students making up 40% of the crowd seems like a lot.

My freshman year was the last full season for the Fieldhouse and as a Sophomore living in Reinow, it was pretty convenient to go to a the last games by simply walking across the street. Immediately, Carver had a completely different feel in terms of fan/crowd participation. It was too comfortable and people sat on their hands. Students were spread throughout as I remember and that was a big mistake.

Your basketball connection sucks. Mine says it is a possibility.
There it is. What I heard is that he is working out, feeling really good and there is a good possibility that he could be ready by mid-October to start playing at full speed and see if he can be ready by early November.

That is the best case scenario. The other scenario is he continues to rehab and they see how November goes for the team. They have a brutal schedule and if they can surprise and pull off some wins it might be worth it for him to come back even if it is sometime in December. They don't want to waste his final year, but if they are good and he can play by the full Big Ten season he will play.

Shit. He's going to come off the bench and hit 6 threes in Ames, isn't he?

Actually that would be even better. Play reduced minutes in like 5 games and then the full year next year. That would drive ISU fans crazy.

If they can finish up the recruiting class nicely with a couple of impact players and if they knew that Wieskamp was coming back for sure, I would rather have bohannon next year as they would have a good chance of contending for the Big Ten title and a great seed in the NCAA Tournament.

bohannon / Toussaint / Connor / Ulis
Wieskamp / Fredrick
Patrick / Impact Freshman
Nunge / Pemsl
Garza / Foster

Best case scenario is that he plays this year but can't log as many minutes as the primary ball handler. Let him do what he does best off the ball and space the floor.

I would put the odds of him playing at 70/30 right now.

Guess or info from LWades insider?
Estimation, not a guess.

L. Wade's basketball insider doesn't know shit. If you follow the timeline here, I posted Saturday at 4pm that I think bohannon is going to play and some info based off what my INSIDER!! source told me. L. Wade almost immediately responds "No".

This morning suddenly Jon Rothstein posts essentially what I hinted at on Saturday.

Now I am estimating the odds at 70/30 based off all of this and a little bit more from this afternoon.

He wants very badly to play this year and is doing everything he can to make it happen. The doctors/trainers/coaches think it is a growing possibility.

You're welcome for this Halo Exclusive.

Is slipping Foster in the two-deeps (as a back-up?) also a HaLo exclusive?

I have no idea why Doug is claiming that I got this info from some insider. I never said that.

Oh wait, yes I do know why.

And they had never seen Todd The Criminal coach an Iowa basketball team.
