It is terrible. Caitlin Clark had 2 fouls today early in the 2nd quarter. She largely stayed in the game, got 6 or 8 points, and largely productive the rest of the quarter.

She finished the game with 3 fouls over 36 minutes.

Fran would have had her benched the last 8 minutes or so of the first half/second quarter.
Weird, there’s a different, much better way to approach that aspect of the game. I wonder if there’s other areas? I probably haven’t watched enough or studied the analytics enough to know.

It's pretty simple - Fran has generally outperformed his resources at Iowa. If you're not happy with the ultimate performance (which is completely reasonable), in addition to a coaching change you better hope that change comes with a fairly large step up in commitment from the school and fans.

Or HURR DURR EVERYTHING'S FINE I'M AFRAID OF CHANGE, I guess.

And obviously Fran can’t get a step up in support. He had a couple player of the year guys, had good seeding seasons, won the big ten tournament. Yet here we are. Thinking that’s as good as it gets isn’t insane, thinking that others might think it could be better but that makes them sports idiots, is.

Why are all of your arguments here refutations of things people aren’t saying?

I think Iowa is one of the worst jobs in the league and probably one of the worst P5 in the country.

Because we’re literally talking about something that hasn’t happened. Part of being a successful college basketball coach is getting financial support. Does Iowa basketball have good financial support?

This is like arguing with a mashup of nolook and howler.
It seems to me you’re just scared to say that Fran should be fired. I’m sure if he just hired a defensive coach things will change.

If Iowa fucking state with arguably the worse resources for any major program anywhere can do what they’ve done then Iowa should be able to have a sweet 16 run more than every few decades

For the record though Alan, if Fran stays I’m not going to be up in arms. If a change is made I also will not be up in arms against it.

I think you should be. If he takes Iowa to the sweet 16 I’ll be happy to be wrong. I don’t think it’s possible with him at this point, and anything short of that is a disappointing season at this point.

that’s why things don’t change. People like to complain, but no will actually step up and help us win. So just enjoy having a good but stale program. We are exactly repeating the Davis era without the off the court issues.

Just because Fran cant do it, doesn't mean that no one can. JFC look at all the shitty schools who have advanced in the tournament over the last 14 years
lol that Fran “can’t” do it. He HASNT done it, but we’ve had good enough teams.

What were the off the court issues for Davis?

It’s not just not getting to the sweet 16 at Iowa, it’s the performance in the second round going back 25 years. Other than the OT loss to Tennessee a couple years ago, a game they trailed by 21, they seem to get absolutely housed every time they get there.

Frans a really good coach that a lot of Iowa fans have checked out on. If a new coach creates new NIL funds then you have to consider it. But you also have to hire someone that wouldn’t perform any worse. I’m not sure Minnesota is in a better position now than they were with Pitino for example. But I can also acknowledge Fran had Garza and the Murray’s for 6 years and managed 2 tournament wins. And yes I get they lost the COVID year, but let’s make some assumptions here.

Iowa is a great job because the fan base has accepted mediocrity. Is there another power 5 school that’s kept a coach for 14 years without getting to the 2nd weekend of the tournament? At Iowa we just chalk it up to bad luck.

I think part of the problem might be that Iowa fan is too stupid to have any expectations for basketball. We just don't have the resources like the power houses at Loyola, George Mason, Dayton, NC state, Oregon State, FAU, Kansas St, texas tech, etc.

It's not The Criminal ball and they don't suck ass, but outside of one BTT run, the postseason results are underwhelming. It's embarrassing when you look at what the last 3 retards have been able to do at ISU

Among active power coaches, Tad Boyle has been at Colorado for 14 years with none. Him, Fran and Brownell were hired the same year. Brownell made one S16 but only made the tournament 3 times and lost R1 the other two prior to this year.

I like to tell myself the 2020 team would have made it through.

Now that @douglasbader has proclaimed Fran being gone, its probably time to stop the bitching and move forward. Doug has a tremendous track record

Two sweet 16s with an elite 8 appearance is light years better than Francis.

I'd take his past 14 years over Fran no problem

NCAA tourney results is like 90% of what matters for college bball now. Iowa program and fan support isn’t anything great, but things got real apathetic real quick after the disastrous endings to the Garza and Keegan seasons. Don’t see how fan support and excitement comes back now, aside from a new coach who can take things to the next level. But with Iowa’s level of program support, it’s far more likely the next guy is equal to or a step down from Fran’s level. So Iowa bball is stuck.

Twice - Tennessee play-in in 2014. Which ironically would have been the easiest road to the Sweet Sixteen Fran has had.
So 1/3 of our tournament appearances under Fran ended with losses to double digit seeds. Neat.
