This guy any good?
Seems like he was doing well at Purdue, but unproven on defense in games. He was listed as Dillon Thieneman's(now at Oregon) backup as a true freshman last year and played all 12 games on STs.

I found this quote from Purdue media earlier in April.
Sophomore safety Ty Hudkins was utilized on special teams last season and has been a playmaker this spring.

I'm sure he'll be fine - apparently Phil was interested in him out of high school.

When a guy hasn’t played much since high school and isn’t a known entity, does the staff work him out to ensure he has the requisite physical baseline athleticism and skill to play at Iowa?

I don't know the answer to this for sure but my guess is no. Especially this kid who played last year as a true freshman. They have tape.

I fucking love Tim Lester.

I love this behind the scenes stuff. BF mirrored in his Dad, in that everything is a a highly-regarded secret.

For as much crap as we give Iowa beatwriters, Leistikow (and Dochterman) love getting into the play concept talk with Lester.

Related question, but did we even use tablets on the sideline last year? Would love to have a QB heady enough to at least be looking at coverages.

Or the idea that anyone having a better idea than what he was already doing was asinine. I obviously don't know him, wasn't in the room, etc., but the impression was that if someone said this to Brian his default action would be to get defensive about why his wristband was actually better and you just didn't understand it.

Dead on. Find it in poor leaders all the time. "If it's not my idea, it's a bad one" mentality.

The worst part of Brian's work was that the week after the bye, there'd be nothing new.

What else?
He's not going to answer because he doesn't know.

Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz sucked. He was horrible. But the idea that any OC, even horrible ones, is suddenly going to install something new and different enough that fans would actually notice is kinda silly. You put in your offense in the spring, assuming there's anything new from the season before. You might tweak a few things during the season. The bye week isn't some magical time to make a bunch of changes so significant that they couldn't be made during any other week.

Lol.

It's impossible to install any new plays or wrinkles in 2 weeks.

Football is so complex!

A bye week is a great opportunity to tweak the game plan a bit to target weaknesses of your upcoming opponent as well as break some patterns you’ve discovered through self scouting.

Unfortunately for us, Brian wasn’t very effective at either of those.

the best example that comes to mind was years ago, when Iowa used to run a lot of wr screens....I think it was vs Purdue, they used the same formation, the same motion and faked the wr screen and instead of blocking, the TE (Dallas Clark IIRC) broke down like he was going to block, then turned upfield and was wide open for a TD pass.

not something that required a year to install, a tweak or wrinkle on a play they ran every week.
