I wonder if the poor results of the 2014 and 2015 classes were related to Fran being (understandably) at home more due to Patrick's cancer diagnosis.

No, it has to do with signing classes full of 3-star kids who all had decent offers (hell, even Ellingson had one from Mizzou), and all seemed to have potential, and then only one of them panned out (Moss, sort of kind of).

If you consider how they looked when they signed, the 2020 class doesn't look all that different from the 2015 one. It be like that sometimes.

FYI, Fran and Alford currently have exact same winning pct while at Iowa

Alford took over a program coming off a Sweet 16 with NBA level talent. Fran came in and had to run off fat Cougs and Cully Payne.
I have no data to back this up but it feels like the Big Ten has also been way better during Fran's tenure. Not really sure what point Stu was trying to make.

I just looked at Kenpom's conference strength formula for all the years he has (back to 1997), and you're actually correct. The Big Ten has on average been relatively a stronger conference during Fran's tenure:
