Signed up to coach the pre-season #1 ranked '61 Hawks for a cool $15K.

Sadly, he lost his All-American halfback on his 3rd carry of the season and his All-Big 10 QB in the second quarter of game two, as well as others as the season wore on. (Hollis was denied an injury redshirt for playing in 6 of 36 quarters.)

His greatest mistake was reportedly ignoring Boys Town halfback Gale Sayers on his recruiting visit, allegedly because they regarded Bubba Smith's older brother Willie Ray more highly. Willie Ray flunked out after his sophomore season, Bubba went to Michigan State and Sayers went somewhere where he was a higher priority.

Slight revision to the Gale Sayers being ignored in his recruiting visit account (courtesy of Cloyd Webb). It was Henry Carr, the '64 Olympic 200 meter champion, that was getting the red carpet treatment.,

Still a horrible mistake. Sayers was a Hawk fan and no doubt admired fellow Boys Towner Wilburn Hollis, who would have been a senior in Sayers' freshman year.

I've never heard of this from an Iowa source, but in his book, Joe Namath listed Iowa as one of the schools he visited. I like to think that if Evy was still running the show, he signs Joe and Sayers. The Alabama co-eds might have been a high hurdle to overcome, though. But an Iowa program headed by Evy was better than Alabama at that point. It should be noted that Joe was a fine runner and DB until he planted his knee on an option play in '64 and blew it out.
