The coaches really liked Miller from what I remember about his recruitment. At one point they thought they were getting the best tackle in the class but he couldn’t handle it mentally. Hunt would have been nice.

The rest were the types that you hope a couple develop and become contributors but were also ‘he’ll likely be in the portal in a couple years’ guys. McKinney probably had the best chance to contribute but didn’t seem patient enough to wait his turn. Charlie Jones took the job he really wanted.
I can't say many who saw Miller play in high school had a lot of praise. Lots of "yeah the big kid can block the 165 pound DEs in 1A".

He was a very positive recruiter with the rest of the class, but I was not shocked that he flamed out

Has McCall officially left?
Now that you mention it, maybe not. I only looked on the roster, but did he sit out due the to the Rona?
It'd still be shocking to see him there this fall, though. IIRC, when updated weights were listed in spring '20, he had dropped to 215. Maybe he and Doyle had a plan for him to become skin and bone before becoming a stud, but that would be just a bit unusual. When he signed, it was kind of a thing where you just hoped he was a sleeper.

It was easy to get excited seeing his junior film, because he looked like he moved really well. Then he seemed to get bad reviews as a senior and he seemed to be overwhelmed when he came in. Some HR poster reported on what seemed like a disturbing incident in '19 fall practice in which Polasek was heaping some rather tough verbal abuse on him. It seemed like it wasn't long before he went home for a couple of weeks. Then there were conflicting comments about whether he was physically able to play because of back issues.

did we want any of those guys anyways? Serious question since I’m sure you watched their high school film and I enjoy your opinion.
The film that stuck out was Jeudy's, which was one of the worst ever. Basically just jumping on piles. (My vote for worst ever film was LB Martin Hopkins in 2009. Scott Covert might not have even had a film. You wondered what coaches were seeing for a couple of years there.)

It seems like Fenske's was OK; kind of a "it depends on what's inside him" thing. Maybe Cole Banwart level athletically?

I revisited McKinney's when he left. He had the rep as an excellent returner, but they looked rather ordinary, actually. He did start off fast as an early enrollee; I think he had 2 picks in the final spring scrimmage. But he got passed quickly by Jermari Harris in the fall.

At the time Mitch Keppy was offered by Iowa, I still had a subscription at TOS. I mentioned to Kakert that the wrong player’s video had been uploaded under Keppy’s name because there was no way that what I was watching was video of a player who would get an offer from a D1 school.

When Kakert insisted it was the right video, I asked him if Keppy played through a serious injury his entire junior year. “Nope, that’s just how he is,” Kakert said.

I don’t think the coaches actually tried to recruit anyone in the 2009 class. It was the quality of a team you would expect to be coming off of multiple 3-9 seasons.

Fuck it. I am onboard the Petras Express.
I will shower, nay, BATHE in my wrongness if he turns out to be a world beater this year. My fear however, is that he’s lighting it up in an environment where his brain subconsciously knows he isn’t going to get hit...and the minute that changes that little lump is going to go haywire.

I'm not expecting all Big Ten play out of him by any means, but the Petras hate is getting weird on here.
If Douglas is right, I believe he was statistically the worst QB in the country last year. I may be remembering it wrong, but that's what I think Doug said and that's what my eyes also told me.

Do you know anything about stats?

But it’s so weird to not like your team’s worst-in-the-nation QB.

At any other school he’d be the toast of the town.

I think many fans are still pissed at Spencer for that NW performance and the first half of the Illinois game. Those 6 quarters were some of the worst QB play I have seen in my 25 years as an Iowa fan.

In his defense, however, the last 6 quarters he played at a level "close" to Nate Stanley. He would make some good throws sprinkled in with some WTF was he thinking moments. I **think** that maybe fans would be less hard on the kid if he got to rape Michigan and Missouri.

It's not weird at all. He fuckin sucks
He was really fucking bad for 90% of the past season. But people are already acting like he has ruined the upcoming season.

It seems like we'll all have plenty of time to hate him in a few months is all.

Somebody spill the beans on Fenske

There's some dude on both HR and HI going full damage control about how it definitely wasn't playing time or anything normal, and it's kinda fishy

What's amazing about that is depsite how bad he was, the Hawks still went 6-2. Average QB play and they likely go 8-0 and win the West.

Petras had raised himself up to the 89th best QB in the country by the end of last season. At one point he was by far the worst P5 QB other than the 17 year old Kansas QB.

He specifically didn't mention the football program in his transfer tweet. That's all the further I'd look into it. He probably feels slighted about something, but I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about a guy who was a reach as a recruit that was probably never going to be anything more than depth. Yawn.

89th in passing efficiency
84th in completion percentage
73rd in passing TD's, but more like near last for anyone that played at least 8 games
91st in yards per pass attempt

Maybe he will be much improved, but he was fucking garbage last year and Iowa didn't even play anyone worth a shit besides Northwestern and a .500 Wisconsin team.

He improved a little after the last few games, so he ended the season all the way up at like 80th in adjusted yards per attempt, out of 105 qualifying players. 87th in passer rating.

Looked up his Game log from last year. Those first 6 games. Woof.

The most frustrating thing about his ineptitude last season is he had better weapons at the receiver position than any QB has had at Iowa in a long, long time.
All the way back to Nate Stanley’s time

Here is the list of qualifying QBs with a worse 2020 passer rating than Petras:
