I don’t feel like screenshotting this whole thing and I’m not sure it’s worth the read.

What’s more interesting to me is: why did Brian make himself available for this article, which apparently involved 6 hours of film session with a reporter?

A peak behind the curtain with the worst offensive coordinator in college football.
He’s either trying to rehab his image because he still thinks he can be successor, or because the AD has heard negative feedback on his performance from boosters.

"You guys don't understand how hard all of this is because you're idiots."

That's fine, Brian, but why are you the absolute worst at it among those who do understand it and do it for a living?

Are you more "us" than "them"?

Are you the lowest paid coordinator in college football?

I don't have access to the article but I bet he knew all the proper terminology or even made up some of his own.

As our new QB coach, he may have TonyR mentoring him.

I read the article and was actually disappointed in it. Not from what Brian said, but that he spent 6 hours with Brian and he wrote about roughly 3 plays.

The only somewhat interesting thing is they found something on film for the Ohio State game that made them think Ohio State was extremely shitty on defense outside of natural ability. Their first offensive play was a basic shift to see if they were as dumb as the film showed and after that play they knew they could exploit them with Hockenson and Fant.

They should find something similar for the other 12 Big Ten teams.

I read it and did not come away confident that we have answers to teams “daring us to throw it over their head.”

It was sadly clear that he does not have any answers to that.

Brian certainly seems to recognize teams do that and views it as a “pain in the ass”, though

I suspect Purdue has the same feelings when they watch tape of us.

I’m sure it’s all tied together but I’m not sure you can just magically throw it deep when you don’t actually have a deep threat. They’ve had maybe 3 in the last 10 years? Powell, Tevaun Smith and ISM. Part of that is recruiting which isn’t made easier by their perception nationally.

It doesn’t even need to be “deep”. How about like just past the linebackers semi regularly?

Aren’t like 70-80% of the wide receivers white? That’s not normal.

Has there ever been a fan base subjected to a worse passing offense over a ten year period?

Can't forget this guy.

I listened to a preview of the big ten west, the iowa portion was essentially, “they can’t throw the ball, can’t really run the ball, can’t score, and they don’t care. Come get in the mud, they could win the west…”

I really don’t think we’re being unreasonable on wanting just a touch more.

I’m hopeful that the run game is good enough that Spence only has to throw it 15 times per game. Ten of which will go to LaPorta.
This is the part that makes me want to gouge my fucking eyes out watching this team.

As an Iowa football fan, I've accepted that Iowa is going to have a shitty passing game, that's fine. But 98th out of 130 FBS schools last year in rushing YPG is inexcusable. Brian's bullshit excuse is always "they're loading up the box and daring us to throw". Ok dumbfuck, how do you think defenses play Wisconsin? You think they're just putting 6 in the box and letting them run? Yet Wisconsin, in a down year for them, was still top 20 in the country in rushing offense with Graham Fucking Mertz at QB.

And you can bitch all you want about the OL being green, in 2019 2/5ths of your OL was future NFL 1st round picks and you managed to put out a running game that was 90th in the country in rushing YPG.

The Iowa offense has zero identity and is trying to be way too many things instead of simplifying their scheme and getting really good at one thing.

/Rant.

I blame the zone blocking scheme. Complicated and totally ineffective if not executed flawlessly.

In 2016 Iowa had 2x 1000 yard rushers in Wadley and Daniels with effectively no passing game due to lack of receiving options and Greg Davis. If I remember correctly they ran a lot of gap scheme in addition to zone that year. Brian was literally the “run game coordinator” at the time. What the fuck changed? And why did it change? It’s an interesting question.

i don’t hate zone blocking at all. With constraint and a reasonable amount of mobility at QB it can be extremely effective. We see it every week on both major levels of football. But when you look at a team like the 49ers they mix gap in there quite a bit.

I find myself forever annoyed that for years, Iowa played a pass defense built around the assumption that college QBs would eventually screw up if you could force them to take 8 plays to go 80 yards, then promptly spent a decade with a pass offense that takes 10 plays to go 80 yards.

Those other offenses are trying to score on each possession though

Talked to an ex-Iowa OL over the weekend. He’s optimistic abt the OL this year. Said the tackles were the worst Iowa has had under Ferentz but not bc of talent, it was purely experience. Thinks run game will be improved and pass pro will be much improved.

Is also very optimistic abt BF taking over for KOK. Said the offense was ALL KOK, and that BF has wanted to do some things but KOK essentially didn’t want to.

Said the biggest hindrance will always be lack of a threat on the outside as we already know. I asked him what makes Wisconsin so good traditionally and he said experienced OL. Iowa seems to always be working newer guys in whereas WI usually has guys that are 3-4 year starters.

Iowa's national rank in rushing YPG the last 5 years:

2021: 98th
2020: 57th
2019: 90th
2018: 95th
2017: 95th

Lmao off if you believed any of the shit he told you.
