Umass lost to Temple 42-10 to open the season and then lost to Bryant (didn't realize they played football) 27-26.

I'm not sure if they are worse than Albany but they aren't good obviously.

By my count, they have scored 56 or more points nine times* in the Ferentz era, and have not done so at all since beating Illinois 63-0 in 2018.

*
That Illinois score doesn’t even feel possible. I watched it happen and can’t believe this same head coach was in charge.

Delaware State scored more points than Iowa did against Albany last week.
UAlbany is a bad football team. Umass is a bad football team.

Last year, they only led Illinois State 6-0 at halftime in the season opener, and were losing to Troy at halftime. In 2023, they only led Western Michigan by 4 points at halftime. In 2022, SDSU was 3-3 at halftime. In 2021, they were losing to a bad Colorado State team at halftime, and played Kent State close for a half before rolling in the second. They simply don't dominate non-conference opponents like they used to. No, I don't think the result will ever be in doubt this weekend. But it's not difficult to imagine a clunky offense looking clunky again, even against an inferior opponent.
Kent State?

That was nice watching an actual offense in that old video. I can’t think of a game from the last 5-6 years that I would want to rewatch like that.

No point in watching any KF team again because they’ll all look the same.

I will likely never stop watching Iowa Football but it’s no longer appointment TV. If I’m home, cool. If not, I’lol just watch it later without commercial breaks.

I know the same things get said after every Iowa loss, but the apathy has slowly crept in over the past five years. Watching just doesn’t bring the same excitement it once did. What used to be one of the best parts of Kirk Ferentz’s teams - the feeling that they could hang with anyone and knock off bigger, better programs any given week - just isn’t there anymore. The national respect Iowa once had has been replaced with jokes about their offensive ineptitude.

I have tickets and will go to the games, but I will be golfing during away games. Iowa football has become Fran era basketball to me.
I'll be taking my mom to Wisconsin and hanging out with the elderly

Awesome, I was hoping to open this thread and read what your personal outlook is for the rest of the season! And say pretty much what 10 other posters have said over the past 5 days!

I certainly have more apathy the last five years, but even if my teams weren't various forms of dumpster fires I'm not sure I'd ever have the same excitement I once did. NIL and the portal have just changed the sport from what it once was. And of course I think it was better in the 90s and early 00s because that's when I grew up watching it.

Although that's probably just one big cope to deal with mediocrity.

Last night while watching the 1-0 Minnesota Vikings. I was resigned to watching both of my teams playing Fagot offensive football this season for fear of making a mistake. Both Painful and fucking awful to watch.

One team decided it was just going to say fuck it and not play Fagot ball anymore and just let er rip. Well, if you are not aware that team ended up beating a hated rival.

Hopefully the other one was watching because they chose Fagot ball and lost again to a hated rival.

I am by no means comparing the two teams and the talent and capability to do so. But, the victorious Vikings were not winning that game playing Fagot football.

Just an observation

I will watch all the games.

Unless they conflict with the WNBA Playoffs.

It’s because you’re older now and your priorities are changing. You can call it apathy but that’s not really what it is.

Without a doubt this is a big part of it. When I was younger Iowa football was the centerpiece to the weekend. Now it's almost a nuisance trying to work it into my schedule with kids events/responsibilites. Add to it NIL and all the other changes in the college sports landscape and my focus shifts elswhere. I still watch, but the losses don't sting as bad and the wins aren't quite as sweet.

These guys get really technical into the X's and O's. They clearly coach or have coached somewhere.

They don't pull any punches when it comes to Iowa's offensive scheme and playcalling, and how often the things they do just don't make any sense.

They also think Iowa has a lot of future NFL players. I’m not sure about that.

Also, from their breakdown and watching the 2 games so far, it seems that Phil Parker went into the offseason pissed off with how the defense performed and made an effort go change things and develop players. The result is Iowa's defense is really fucking good again.

Of course, the offense just fucking blows and is going to waste another great Phil Parker defense.

As much as Lester is better than fat fuck Brian, the warning sign on him is how much he has been in love with TJ Washington for over a year despite all the evidence that he sucks.

I watched the whole thing. Amazing breakdown and very concerning about the offense.

Essentially: our players suck but oh by the way, scheme sucks too.

I think there are a number of warning signs. I wouldn’t even call this the biggest one.

Kirk has been great on the whole no question but he isn’t capable of fixing the issues that exist particularly the offense.
Hope he retires after the season and hope Beth has a good shortlist

Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz couldn't figure out how to make Johnson consistently productive, so there's obviously more to it than that. Lester seems to know how to get a running game going. He's gotten good results through the air at previous stops, so my guess is that what the system needs most is a QB who doesn't throw ducks and actually pulls the trigger when someone's open

If we sign a quarterback that can throw the ball, Kirk is going to feel pressure to utilize the forward pass. He cannot have that.
