Dochterman & Leistikow have clearly learned Cade just quit on the team. Listen to the first 15 minutes of their podcast from this morning. They’re slightly holding back until it’s clear he’s not participating publicly but sure seems like he will never take another snap with Iowa.

Yeah, they both want to say more and did their best to imply it. Scott wants to call Cade out for wanting everyone to fall in line when he’s the starter but doesn’t think he should have to if someone else is.

I haven't been paying attention.... is that the word that he quit? He got pulled in that game and essentially faked a concussion?
I don’t think it was a fake concussion. I’m guessing after the Wisconsin game he was told it’s Sullivan job and at that point he decided he was done. I believe they planned on Cade starting this week, Cade put in little to no effort in practice Sunday because he’s mentally done, they realized they had to go in a different direction and decided they had to make Lainez available in case Stratton gets hurt.

This is my own speculation, but just read what Kirk said on Tuesday. It’s pretty obvious he’s biting his tongue while simultaneously implying Cades a bitch. His comment about ‘distractions’ this time of year is pretty telling.

I hope everyone involved learned a valuable lesson with Cade. Paying a guy who quit on his previous team the moment he was removed as the starter and then gifting him the starting role on your team and tanking half a season for him was a really dumb decision.

Kirk needs to treat the QB position as a merit based position just like all the other positions. Sort of like he should have treated the OC position.

I don't think it matters though, my guess is Kirk is about to coach last 3 games of his career.

This is also a perfect encapsulation of the new conference realignment, NIL and CFP era.

A traditional Big Ten development program with rent-a-players phoning it in, 6-4 team with nothing to play for coming off a weird late season bye week playing on the road on the east coast against a shit former ACC program at 11am.

Players don't seem to care because they have nothing to play for and have already been paid, coaches are frustrated, fans apathetic and everyone just wants it to be over.

They ruined the best thing we had in sports because people got drunk off the BTN making millions.

Listening to another podcast with Leistikow and Tyler something and they are going over all the comments from Kirk and the players, and what a shit show. Defensive guys basically admitting they didn't do the work, got big heads and full of themselves. Nobody has real focus this year.

This is exactly why @CamelTones has been screaming that bringing back a bunch of guys collectively that had already mentally moved on or had played their full time at a school never works out. The players were basically admitting they just put it on auto-pilot and have gotten their ass handed to them.

If you just had let nature take its course and get younger, hungry and motivated players on the field early, then maybe the defense isn't a shit show multiple times this year. Some of the older guys were clearly mentally done and just took the money to come back and went through the motions instead of putting in the work.

Feels a lot like that 2010 group that got full of themselves after the second half of the 2008 and all of the 2009 season and then couldn't keep their focus to finish out the job in 2010 despite being extremely talented. They get distracted, have poor leadership and boom you end up with a 7-5 regular season.

That doesn't seem that much different than any other 6-4 year with nothing of importance to play for. It's just that it hasn't been us the last few years.

It’s completely different. Its changed a lot in the last 10 years. Playing for a better bowl game was always motivation for teams. Getting to a January 1 game. Going to Florida instead of El Paso.

Once players started opting out, it changed. Nebrantska definitely has something to play for right now.

And to Doug’s point about bringing players back, look at every example where it’s happened at Iowa. 2005, 2010, 2014 and now 2024. I’d even argue 2016.

Jermari Harris and Nick Jackson are the only 2 guys that you could argue didn’t have a significant drop off from last year. Every other player they brought back has regressed in some form. Castro has been almost invisible out there all year.

Also, I don’t think this is Kirks last year. He’s not hanging it up this close to setting the Big Ten record.

I'm not ready to say that everyone has given up. We just piss-pounded Wisconsin 3 weeks ago. I'm guessing it's more a mix of guys being banged up, not playing well on the road, and losing starters on the DL and the best CB in the league that we haven't been able to replace more than guys quitting.

To be clear, I'm not saying everyone has given up and don't think Camel is either. Simply saying that a few clearly have and others are admitting they didn't have the right mental mindset this year. Other programs might have the talent and depth to survive that, but a program at Iowa can get thrown off by even just a couple not being all the way bought in.

You are right though, it's also a combo of guys being banged up as well.

I don’t think guys are quitting, but what is there to play for? They aren’t making the playoff. They can’t win a division (even just to be 20-point underdogs in Indy). The bowls are all on one giant tier of “who cares?” After the Wisconsin game, they have had two awful conference expansion games and then a pseudo-rivalry that I like but is still probably their #4 rivalry. The last month of the season just sort of feels like a long exhibition.

It obviously depends on what part of the State one lives, but I would say Nebrantska would be #3 rivalry, with Iowa being their #1. This is for football, is different for other sports.

I would rank (IMO):

1. Wisconsin
2. Minnesota
3. Nebrantska
4. Illinois
.
. Huge divide

5. Northwestern
5. Michigan
5. Michigan State
5. Penn State
.
9. Ohio State
10. Purdue
11. Indiana

Higgins has been playing hurt and still awesome. He’s going to be an All American.

I mentioned this a few weeks ago, but the bowls used to legitimately be a massive motivator to players. Not only was it a free trip to somewhere warm, but they were nearly as excited about the gift packages / gift suites that they got. Getting a $500 gift card, a watch and a Playstation or getting to go into a hotel conference room and pick out a number of things they would then ship to you was a huge thing.

Good luck with that when most players can just go buy anything they want or pay for their own sunny vacation with no rules now.

Not to mention fans don’t care anymore. Playing a bowl game in a stadium that’s 2/3 empty isn’t that appealing

Wonder if a 'best of the rest' type of format would be more entertaining/motivating. Imagine another playoff with some of the higher ranked teams outside of the CFP getting double byes further into the field of.... (24?). You have a playoff format for that group to play for some sort of title with home games and interesting matchups a la the Europa vs. Champions.

Can’t get guys to care about a trip to Orlando, but I’m sure everyone will be excited to play four games in varying locations for the right to hold up a “we’re #13! banner”.

Sounds like if Cade quits the team he loses his NIL money

Again, if games for these teams are going to be played regardless (the Orlando who cares bowl as you mention) does the structure of those games (an NIT of sorts) make it better? Not playing them at all - so only CFP - is also an option.

Sounds like everyone is way down on the Orlando version of post-season non CFP, so just throwing out something. It could be dumb, obviously.

Sounds like Cade is who we thought he was. Not that it wouldn’t be hard to have the fans and likely much of the team turn on you (because you are both a bad and boring player). But his apparent reaction to it shows what kind of leadership and resolve he brought to the table. Good riddance.

Looking back, all those compliments Harbaugh was throwing his way at media days last year had a little Izzo/The Criminal vibe to them.

In that one they reference a podcast from Tuesday where the QB situation is discussed at length.

That’s the one I want to listen to, but can’t find.

That's presumably the consensus sentiment. I also suggested eliminating them (non CFP) games entirely could be done. What's your preferred post season structure for those that miss the CFP? The current?

Dochterman also said on the podcast that he talked to someone in the program that said this is the most positive they’ve felt about the program in a few years. The addition of Lester has probably helped, but the Brian/Petras/Cade stuff has probably been annoying as fuck to navigate for 4 years.

The 12 team play off caused this shit. A 6 team playoff would have sufficed for a few years before more whining would've moved it to 8. 12 was absolutely retarded, there's never more that 3 teams that are actual contenders anyway
