I like Tim Lester a lot. He's worked a fucking miracle this year given where we were at the last several years, and having to navigate a bunch of leftover bums that I assume KF put a finger on the scales for.
And because of that, I don't mind doing whatever it takes to keep Phil if KF retires. Who are you going to get as DC that's better? Fucking nobody, that's who. Even if he only has 5-7 years left in the tank. Good players want to come to Iowa because he's here. Assuming he's not planning on just retiring whenever Kirk does.
I think it's kind of a moot point though, because I don't think any of them are leaving after this year. Kirk is going to stay and get his record, and the rest of the gang is going to hang right there with him. It's not exciting, and they've got a bitch of a schedule next year, but maybe they can have some sort of magical season.
After that, I think Kirk is done. And if that's the case, provided Phil and Lester are still performing at a high level and interested in staying, I think it's ok to have a stopgap guy from within the program for the next couple of years as long as it's not a long term commitment.
