Campbell looked very good in his first extended action. a couple bad plays but he has great range and instincts. Benson is ok, but a liability in pass defense.

someone keeps saying they should move Campbell to DE..I dont think thats a great idea. Hes a rangy athlete but doesnt appear incredibly explosive like a premier DE.
My armchair analysis is that campbell needs to get a little better at angles and anticipating stuff, but he is clearly very athletic and decisive/aggressive.

People like to shit on Vandenberg for 2012, but he was good (not saying he is great) in 2011.
I don't think anyone blames 2012 on anyone other than Greg Davis.

YouTube tv saves games that one watches. So I’m able to watch and laugh at Kirk taking the timeouts. I do wish they would have sacked Morgan on that next play.

I will continue to pound home that they were the luckiest fucking team on earth last year in addition to having a crazy easy schedule. They legit could/should have lost their first 4 games of the year.

They beat up on a mediocre Illinois and bad Nebrantska and Northwestern team. Rutgers and Maryland were both horrible and were 2 of their crossover games they won. I watched the entire Penn State game and Penn State fucked up so may times in scoring position it was ridiculous. Wisconsin beat them down.

The win against Auburn was good in the bowl game. Can't take anything away from them on that.

People are shocked this year they are bad, but imagine if they would have come off a more realistic 7 or 8 win season instead of 11 wins and the Fleck hype machine.
The refs also jobbed PSU in that game. They were driving late for a go-ahead TD, a Gopher DB should have been called for a very obvious defensive PI, and the pass fell right into the arms of a Gopher. Really bad missed call by the ref who was looking right at it.

And regarding Morgan's regression....last year their offense seems to consist mostly of throwing jump balls to their tall receivers who either made the play or drew a PI call. Remember their game against us? Some really poor underthrown passes that Batemon et al went up and got...credit to them, of course. But nothing about Morgan says 1st round pick to me.

if he was a first round pick he would have left after last year, like any other sane college football player.

Nobody said he would have been a first round pick last year. They were projecting it for after this year.

I vaguely remember that book and do not recall a group of kids consistently pooping on the football field

Petras’ last 3 throws were actually pretty good. Need more of that.
He was also 5/6 before the pick. The dude has some mental/performance issues, but I do think there have been really good throws in every game. He has just thrown away too many easy plays.

I dunno what it is but I really can’t support anything BHGP or GIA put out. I have never been able to get into those sites at all.

In case anyone wants to read the GopherHole thread on the game. It’s rather enjoyable.

Surprisingly they were pretty much all on board with KF's timeouts at the end.

Just seemed silly. Obv the iowa coaches asses got chapped for Minnesota calling a timeout so they went douche bag and called all three of theirs to make a point.

It’s even more obvious the KF hates Fleck. You only do that as an opposing coach if there’s some personal shit going on there.

Fleck has negative recruited against Iowa. He's also a douche and they don't respect him.

Also cool to see the WRs blocking their asses off even when they aren't getting the ball much. Tracy and Smith had some really good stuff.

Also, supposedly, the Iowa job is the one Fleck really wanted and thought he might have a shot after the 2015 season, but Iowa of course went from everyone wanting to run Ferentz out to loving him.

And Morgan’s the rich man’s Purdy but in the same vain, he had the ultimate luxury of having two NFL receivers last year and only one this year. He’s shockingly bad this year.

I have enjoyed my exchanges with Gopher fans the past 36 hours. So many are upset with going for two, the Beilma “my card said go for two”, when PJ keeping his entire first team in through regulation is just as petty as Kirk calling 3 time outs. It’s all petty, and far from bush league. But it is beautiful.

PJ Fleck plays bush league games. Therefore he receives bush league prizes.
You know what? I’ve never heard it put more eloquently than that right there.

awesome!

VanValkenburg was outstanding. Ton of pressures in the first half and good against the run.
Not to take away from his performance, but that RT (Schlueter?) has been fucking abysmal against us over the years. He's the guy who gave up 3 sacks in a half to Anthony Nelson before they started triple teaming him every play.

Some of the commentary prompted me to dive into the numbers on where Petras stands relative to other Iowa QBs since 2000 and it obviously isn't good.

There have been 23 QBs who have thrown 100 passes or more in a season since 2000 and Petras ranks last in Passing Efficiency Rating and yards per attempt. In fact, his yards per attempt is lower than both Sargent's (6.3 yards/rush) and Goodson's (6.0 yards/rush) yards per rush attempt this season. The 6 yards/rush threshold is elite for Iowa since 2000. For players with a minimum of 33 carries, only 7 have averaged more than 6 yards/rush and 2 of them are Sargent and Goodson this year. Obviously this is a byproduct of the offensive line, the defense and the backs themselves but it is a rarity nonetheless.

Currently Petras is statistically worse than 2000 McCann, 2000 Mullen, 2007 Christensen, 2012 Vandenberg and 2014 Rudock--all QB seasons that are less than impressive. It is not unreasonable to suggest that Petras has, not by a small margin, the best supporting cast of any of those QBs. There is not a weak position on the offense outside of Petras. Michigan State, Purdue and Minnesota are not good defensive teams this year. As someone mentioned above, there has not been one play among his 134 attempts that made you think he has the 'it' factor for QBs.

*For reference, there have been 270 Big Ten QBs that have thrown at least 134 passes in a season. Currently Petras ranks 251/270 on pass efficiency rating and 248/270 on yards/attempt.

There was a tweet during the game (I apologize for no attribution) that said, "Spencer Petras passes are drive killers."
