Some of the commentary prompted me to dive into the numbers on where Petras stands relative to other Iowa QBs since 2000 and it obviously isn't good.
There have been 23 QBs who have thrown 100 passes or more in a season since 2000 and Petras ranks last in Passing Efficiency Rating and yards per attempt. In fact, his yards per attempt is lower than both Sargent's (6.3 yards/rush) and Goodson's (6.0 yards/rush) yards per rush attempt this season. The 6 yards/rush threshold is elite for Iowa since 2000. For players with a minimum of 33 carries, only 7 have averaged more than 6 yards/rush and 2 of them are Sargent and Goodson this year. Obviously this is a byproduct of the offensive line, the defense and the backs themselves but it is a rarity nonetheless.
Currently Petras is statistically worse than 2000 McCann, 2000 Mullen, 2007 Christensen, 2012 Vandenberg and 2014 Rudock--all QB seasons that are less than impressive. It is not unreasonable to suggest that Petras has, not by a small margin, the best supporting cast of any of those QBs. There is not a weak position on the offense outside of Petras. Michigan State, Purdue and Minnesota are not good defensive teams this year. As someone mentioned above, there has not been one play among his 134 attempts that made you think he has the 'it' factor for QBs.
*For reference, there have been 270 Big Ten QBs that have thrown at least 134 passes in a season. Currently Petras ranks 251/270 on pass efficiency rating and 248/270 on yards/attempt.
There was a tweet during the game (I apologize for no attribution) that said, "Spencer Petras passes are drive killers."
