I respect the hell out of you @HiawathaHawk , but you can't come into this thread after this game and shrug off the defense today as new guys missing some keys and if they had made the right reads that everything would have been fine.

Phil (again) had a dogshit game plan against Purdue. He let David Bell run wild. Wide fucking open. All game long. Over and over. Wide open play after play. Stop him and this game is an Iowa win, even with the offensive fuck ups and penalties.

They should have had him double covered, bracketed, spied, whatever term you want to use. It was a total fuck up and cost Iowa a win.
For me the thing that gives hope is that for a decade Phil has struggled against Purdue, while being insanely fucking good at his job. I expect better going forward. Because Phil has proven better is to be expected.

Pass pro was probably my biggest concern long term. It wasn’t terrible but it was all over the place.

Outside of Nixon, the D-Line is painfully average.

The defense backs giving a 15 yard cushion gave me flashbacks to my time in the student section. Hate to say it, but I’m going have to consume vast amounts of booze to cope, just like the late 90s.

We averaged 5.4 per carry, they averaged 3.9.
We averaged 6.8 per pass, they averaged 5.6. We threw 0 INT's, they threw 2. They're gonna throw all the time. You'll live with 282 yards on 50 fucking attempts, especially when you pick them off twice.

Petras was erratic early on but we were up 17-14 with the ball at their 37 before that bullshit penalty on Tracy. 2nd and 6 at midfield, ISM false start puts us 2nd and 11 and never get it. Holding knocks us back to 2nd and 19 before the next FG. 20-17 and about to potentially ice it with 1st down at their 28 when we fumbled. They were going to have 2nd and 15 at the 42 and a facemask made it 1st and 10 at the 22. We had a coverage bust on 3rd down for the TD.

We had 2 fumbles that cost us between 6-14 points and 10 penalties for 100 yards that played a huge role. 2-3 at least were drive killers. It was an incredibly frustrating game to lose and a game we should've won.

It's just annoying to read that the schemes sucked and it's on coaches when we had more success consistently all day on both sides. It's infuriating when Phil Parker puts up results every fucking year and people act like he's a simpleton if we lose a game.

It was the first game of the year with a new QB and several new pieces on D being moved around. It sucks to lose and I've been pissed since it ended. I think Petras showed enough where I think he can be a really good QB. I don't think Brian sucks and I sure as hell will never think Phil fucking Parker is a problem. They just need to tighten shit up.

I agree with this completely but if you're competing nationally, you don't lose that game. Ever. In a world.

They schemed us pretty well on that play. Belton probably should have been spying him but anyone who has attended a coaching clinic in Iowa City knows that we're awfully stubborn when it comes to this.

When Iowa went up 14-7, the way Iowa was owning the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball at that point, I thought it was going to end up a 42-14 type of win. Even tied at 14, I thought it would end up looking like the second half against Nebrantska in 2017.

Iowa just kept stepping on their own dicks.

With that said, Iowa has only scored 30 points once in their last 10 Big Ten games and that was exactly 30 against an 0-9 Rutgers team last year. They have got to start finishing drives more consistently. It’s not that hard in today’s version of football.

Again, I fucking love Phil Parker, but he has weak spots and fucks up like anyone. Purdue and the Brohm's happen to be one of those weak spots and I don't think there is a single thing invalid or wrong with pointing out that he needed to plan something to stop one fucking guy and instead he let him run wild. Shit, we aren't even counting the sure 75 yard or whatever TD he dropped.

If he doubles him all day or brackets him or whatever and Bell still gets his yards and TD's, then fine. At least you did what you could to try and stop their only real weapon. He didn't do that though. They basically let him run free. It's fucking dumb.

Like I said with the basketball reference, if a team comes in with a guy that averages 32 per game and the rest of his team is pretty mediocre and you know you have to double him and give extra attention, but instead you say fuck it and let him run around and shoot wide open shots all game and hit a three to get 50 and beat you at the buzzer, you would want to fucking gut Fran for being so dumb.

That's fair. I wish we were at that level but we aren't apparently. I want us to win the division and this loss hurts that so I'm pissed/disappointed like everyone. Not trying to say everyone should be fine with everything. Just that it was self-inflicted stuff that killed us, much more than scheme.

Big picture, the run game looked good against a solid front. Karlafis smoked us in pass protection a couple times which is to be expected, he'll eventually be a 1st round pick. Bell stuff was annoying but they mostly kept everything in front (got lucky on the bust) but some of the breakdowns I put on fuck ups rather than coaching negligence. The front 7 worries me more than anything.

Totally agreed. During the midway point of the game I wasn't even concerned about losing given the way we were running the ball and our defense settled in.

I also am not going to completely shrug my shoulders at the 2 fumbles by Iowa when on the other side Purdue had a fluke INT at the 10 yard line when they were sure to score and Bell dropped like a 75 yard TD. It isn't like they didn't leave points on the field either.

With that said, Iowa was better and should have won anyways.

I would be fine with Sargent if he was iron clad and never fumbled, but as someone pointed out earlier he has like 4 or 5 huge fumbles in key games and situations.

This is just me, but I would be very selective with his carries and he would be the 3rd back at best.
He had 0 fumbles in 2018 and 2 in 2019 - one was in the Nebrantska game which Iowa won and the other was on the Michigan game.

He’s not may favorite either and is the least talented of the trio but he’s fine if used properly.

Pretty sure he had a key fumble against Northwestern.

Either way, he has 3 or 4 fumbles in key situations and games. That is way too many for a guy that isn't exactly talented.

He definitely fumbled against NW in 2018 or was that IKM?

Smith fumbled today as well. All 3 were basically stripped from behind and everyone watching on tv could see them coming.

And maybe that’s why I’m not as down about the loss as others. Most of Iowa’s fuckups are pretty correctable.

Outside of the Holiday Bowl, Iowa’s offense has underperformed damn near every game.

Brian is not a freer okay caller.

Petras missed some wide open routes all day. He hits those probably a different story although we said the same about Nate quite often

Petras showed he has a huge arm and decent enough mobility. I thought his decision making looked fine. He didn't force it into bad spots but wasn't afraid to push it downfield and air it out. Clearly has to be better in the short game and add touch. Gotta get ISM and Tracy the ball more but the target chart is understandable:

I really don’t think the play calling is that bad. They had almost 500 yards. 4 false starts, a blindside block, a personal foul pulling someone off a pile after your guy fumbled, a hold inside the 15, 2 fumbles lost inside the opponents 35, Petras overthrowing 5 guys that were pretty open, and a left tackle that decided being a vegan was a good idea while playing football.

Sure not every play call is perfect but holy fuck. We bitched about KOK, then Greg Davis, now Brian. There isn’t an offensive coordinator out there that we won’t hate after every loss.

This is why I think that getting the right players on the field that can finish drives is key.

Some of Spencer’s throws were pretty cringeworthy but at least he wasn’t a pants shitter.

I’ll give him a pass as a first game starter against a B10 school. Really would have been nice to play a cupcake or for him to have been given a chance for some real playing time last season

2 cupcakes, Iowa State in Kinnick and then another cupcake would have been a more ideal way to start his career.

Tory Taylor was great in his debut punting performance. I think he’ll prove to be an effective weapon throughout the season, allowing them to flip the field and pin opponents deep.

I also thought Charlie Jones did an admirable job returning punts, especially some catches in traffic. It was refreshing to see instead of the oft practice of waving players off and letting the ball bounce for more yardage.

Duncan and Shudak also looked good.

Yep, the pieces were better than the sum today. We have weapons at every level on offense. QB at minimum showed he has the talent. OL can get better but wasn't bad and has a few guys you can trust. Specialists all look solid. No obvious positional weaknesses on defense.

Need to take care of the details and tighten up. Sucks that they blew a game today but the pieces are there to have a good season.

Goodson: 16 carries for 77 yards. Sargent: 11 carries for 71 yards.
This is so fucking stupid. IKM averaged more yards per carry than both of them. Using your logic, IKM should've been in there when Sargent choked the game away.

Because there's definitely no such thing as sample size. If you want to say you prefer Goodson for the majority of the carries, that's fine. He's not going to get them all, was gassed several times today and took himself out.

You got stupid and said an RB who had 11 carries for 71 yards with a TD in a Big Ten game, has no business playing Big Ten football. That same RB has 289 carries for 1,379 yards, a 4.8 yards per carry average, 14 TD'. And 31 catches for 294 yards. No business playing at this level.

Taylor and Nixon are studs. As shitty as today was this still has the feel of a really solid Iowa team to me.

ISM needs to pull his head out of his ass. He was playing the blame game all day long and he played like shit himself. I really hope I’m wrong on this..but he’s going to get on a practice squad, flame out, and probably be the next Iowa athlete to bitch about the coaches for screwing him over a couple of years down the road on Twitter. Just a really disappointing attitude from him today.

Nixon was a stud all day long.

I couldn't tell who ISM was blaming half the time. Was hard to decipher if he was wanting penalties or where/when/how the ball was thrown. He hasn't been a diva so I'll hope it was at the officials. He kind of reminded me of Stefon Diggs today. Hopefully, like Diggs, if he gets the ball a little more, everything is good.

I'm having late 90's vibes as well.... add in Covid, the racial problems are going to really hurt recruiting, player development.

Penn State lost to Indiana
Rutgers smoked Michigan State
Ohio State destroyed Nebrantska

Iowa fans acting like a loss in the 1st game on the road to Purdue is the end of the world. There are 3 programs with a higher profile that feel a whole lot worse right now.
I think Nebrantska fan probably feels better about things than Iowa fan. Deserved or not.

This shit has happened too many times in the last 10 years to be an aberration.
Iowa has lost games like this in the past but not necessarily in this fashion. How many times has Iowa had 10+ penalties in a game under KF? Clean that shit up and Iowa will be fine. Although the DL’s lack of pass rush and the inability to stop that Weisman clone does give me some pause....

These are my only “long term” concerns from yesterday. DLine got very very little pressure against what was one of the worst OLine’s in the conference last year.

the inability to stop the run was maddening.

Campbell will make a difference in the run game.

ISM really disappointed. He looked like a KR playing WR. He did not attack the ball in the air at all.

Smith didn’t look great either. That deep ball is completed if he keeps his head down in his route instead of tracking the ball over his shoulder for 20 yards. He looked too early and it slowed him down.
