The defense left themselves on the field all night. Phil didn’t help them at all. His 3rd down blitzes leaving the middle open was idiotic. He also went back to subbing like crazy on the back end after hardly doing it at all the last 2 weeks.

If we’re being honest with ourselves, he’s kinda sucked this year.

In a weird way, I do actually understand how UCLA is a shitty running team. They don’t have great plays/blocking, they seem to just have RBs that do their own thing. There were a few legitimately good blocked runs, but in general their RBs ran tough today and Iowa could not stop them like they do most other teams.

UCLA has played maybe the toughest schedule in the country. Had multiple tough losses. Trounced some other teams. Huge on the lines and a near Top 10 rushing defense.

It sucks, but as we have talked about once Iowa lost 3 games nothing mattered anymore. Sullivan is the best QB for this system, but if he can't run he can't play. Cade will start against Maryland but Sullivan will play.

I get why they brough all those guys back on defense, but as @CamelTones has pointed out, it almost never works like you hope. I fucking hate it because it stunts the development of players and fucks you for the next year. How much further along would they be if the younger guys were taking more reps the whole time or if they used that NIL money to get players that had 2 or more years left?

The offense sucked today, but after Sullivan took a couple shots, you can kind of excuse it, I guess.

The defense was awful all game. Credit them with the turnovers, but they couldn't tackle for shit.

Kirk really needs to be done. He’ll stay to break Woody Hayes’ record but really who gives a fuck? Everyone knows Kirk had a good career but isn’t that level of coach. As it is unless he has a sudden epiphany get ready for 1998-2000 all over again boyz.

The tackling was shit today and it was shit against MSU. In between it’s been generally solid but still not up to the usual Iowa standard. Phil is a fucking legend but he’s not God and with even an average defense our ceiling falls real fast.

I'm going to regret getting involved, but I highly doubt 20+ year DC and asst coach of the year forgot how to coach suddenly. Player talent and execution is the issue.

As if it isn’t his fault we haven’t had a remotely good QB take a snap since the 2019 Holiday Bowl. It’s a joke and the pot shots he’ll assuredly throw are as well.

This isn't related to tonight, but the Big Ten is going to be at a huge competitive disadvantage going forward and they need to get the CFP up to 20 or 24 teams.

No matter how nice travel is on private planes and staying in 4 or 5 star hotels, the 2+ time zone thing is real and it's going to continue to be a thorn in the side of the league every single year. Coast to Cost sounds fun and might get you tons of TV money, but you are going to have teams that lose games they really shouldn't. Look at the records already this year.

The SEC goes no further west than Austin, TX. No further north than Columbia, MO. No further east than Clemson, SC. No further south than Gainsville, FL. The longest flight is barely 2 hours.

You have Big Ten teams traveling from fucking Seattle / Eugene / LA to NYC. 5+ hour flights. Making teams play a Saturday night game and then have to travel 4-5 hours to play a short week Friday night game is fucking stupid. I could see it if you had a pussy ass league like the Big XII where the players might not even be sore but having physical Big Ten teams do it is just dumb.

Certainly not what you would expect returning most of the defense from the year before

It's not an excuse and it is a big deal. The evidence already proven by players that are bigger, faster, stronger and in far better shape and way more used to the travel than college teams. NFL has a mountain of documented evidence of how long travel effects performance.
