The D was going all out to stop what Minnesota crushed them with last year (run/pass to the edge). In doing so, it left them uncharacteristically vulnerable up the middle.

What the fuck did Phil Parker do this entire past week? He sure as fuck didn't seem to spend much time watching Minnys offense on film. Or else they threw a lot of new looks out there.

That was the most ill prepared Iowa defense we've seen since Iowa got rape roomed by Minny last year.

It's a damn good thing the offense put on their big boy pants last night, because the defense was clueless. It's one thing to struggle with their running scheme, it's entirely another to leave WRs completely uncovered all over the field.

Glad to be 10-0, but Nebbie having two weeks with that film worries me a bit.

I get this to an extent, however, being "soft in the middle" is understandable. Having blown assignments in pass coverage is not.

If it weren't for two blown coverages last night, the score would have been 40-21. It didn't bite them last night, but against a Nebrantska or Ohio State it could.

was it just me or did Minny pretty much avoid throwing at King all night?

I heard Parker went on vacation all last week.

The funny thing about the Daniels run at the end is if he would have just gotten the first down and went down it's game over. 2 minutes left and they only had one time out. Him scoring actually gave Minny a chance. I'm glad he did it though because Kinnick was rocking and the chant was awesome.

Dad (Iowa grad, '79) is visiting Amarillo and I can't tell you how nice it was to park our asses on the couch and watch football most of the day. Defense was a little too soft to make the game entirely enjoyable (86 points to Min the last two years. WTF?!?), but overall very grateful to have moments like these.

10-0 is something I've waited patiently my whole life for, and it is has arrived. Go Hawks!

Given the defensive performance, I'd believe this.

Lol. Don't be a moron. You know, the other team has coaches and elite athletes. Sometimes they play really well and do things you're not expecting. Sometimes, players don't execute.

You shouldn't. I'm pretty sure it's just a ruse.

Minnesota had a good game plan. They basically lined Maye up on Maybins side of the field the entire game. One of the times he was line up on Kings side he ran a slow cross, King let home go, and he found a soft spot in behind the linebackers for about 20 yards.

This is what happens when you don't do a great job of stopping the run. Linebackers would get sucked in on the play action or fake jet sweep and their tight end would run wide open down the seam or sideline. I'm guessing the coaches will get their point across this week.

There was one play where Minnesota had 2 tight ends wide open in the 4th quarter, if Leidner throws to either one it's a TD. Instead he threw a pass to Maye that hit him in the knee.

doing my typical watching of the dvr and the BTN production is sooo good.

also, it's hard to tweak traditions and not overthink new ideas but whomever came up with the tunnel walk and back in black starting in 2005 deserves a lifetime contract. Im apathetic on Enter Sandman but they better never change the tunnel walk

You're right. Our defensive coordinator and defensive coaching staff didn't spend any time watching Minnesota film this week. Just took the week off.

More likely they were intentionally vanilla so as not to give Purdue any film.

Gotta give MN credit there. Granted everyone knew the halfback pass was coming and the TE throwback pass wasn't all that tricky, but that's a tough offense to defend. There were multiple times I had no clue who had the ball. And Leidner is pretty good.

Agreed. That was tough to defend and you could tell coming in they were going to take whatever Iowa's base defense was going to give them and work off it.

The fly motion Minny ran every play was just enough to freeze the linebackers, and giving it off once or twice is all they needed to keep them honest. That gave them a split second extra time to gain leverage and it worked to their advantage. That combined with a lack of pass rush made it a long night on defense. Getting off the field on 3rd down is, as it will always be, a major key. They need to do better when they get them behind the chains.

As far as Iowa is concerned, one thing I've been impressed by -- nay, amazed -- throughout this whole season is how many great drives the offense has had when starting with their backs against the wall. Their batting average on 85+ yard drives has to be well above the norm.

Early in the year their offense was horrible. The last 3 weeks they have looked much better. Yes they only scored 14 at OSU but they still passed for close to 300 yards in that game. Really the only way Iowa stopped them was them getting called for holding.

Lack of pressure on the QB was a big issue. I hope they can clean that up.

The onside attempt was lol-worthy. Reminded me of the second to last play in the MN/MI game. Classic cases of a fat guy thinking he's smarter than everyone else.

This x 1000. MN's O isn't anything like it was earlier in the year. They have put up a lot of yards through the air the last few weeks but really the "narrative" on them was still that they were a horrible offense.

What I sometimes forget about being in the stadium has how seeing the entire field makes you appreciate coaching preparation so much more. It was clear pretty early that MN's staff had drawn up an excellent attack plan v. Iowa and they happen to have almost the perfect QB to execute it. I was surprised at the quality of MN's O line (though it looked live like Jaleel was horribly held on that long pass in the 1st qtr).

Really missed Ott yesterday.

It helped that we didn't cover anyone, but yes, he can hit the broadside of a barn now.

He's been the only name from the Kirk Ferentz 2011 Horrible High School Quarterback Sweepstakes who seems to have made good. What the hell was that all about anyway?

Leidner is still prone to some gaffes but I think the Minnesota staff did a great job of calling the game and putting Leidner in a position to succeed.

Mabin didn't play that well and our LBs need to disrupt the TEs a bit more.

I just think a lot of those guys on defense are shelled. We got by with a 240 pound freshman for a while, but he should be a half timer. Meier is surely still bothered by the stinger. Miles Taylor is probably still dinged. Fisher has had migraine headache issues the last couple of weeks- that must be fun. They hardly seem to rotate at DT. Nelson just seems to be a tree at DE.

They need turnovers this week in the worst way to get the score up and get some reserves on the field. Then it's only 6 days until they face a well rested Husker team that will have two weeks to rest and prepare. We may need 50 to win that one.

They did a great job in that trips set of confusing the shit out of Iowa's secondary/linebackers. Always ended up with someone running free.

It was one game against a team with a very good coaching staff. They've been lights out all year.

Davis must have seen something in film re: their strong side DE. 2 of the TDs were because he got sucked in.

Fisher was pretty terrible. From the first sweep around the left where he got sucked in with no contain to the pass back to the TE play where he got burned. Definitely not his best performance.

Yay, I think Davis deserves a lot of credit for how good the offense was. Minnesota was crashing both of their corners on some plays on a run blitz also and Iowa burned them on that a couple of times. The bootleg for the TD with CJ was a great play call and there was not a Gopher in the picture. He could have rubbed one out quick and still scored.
