I like Sullivan but reluctantly agree that he's probably not a sustainable solution. If he starts playing to avoid hits, he probably loses a good bit of the mojo he's got. I actually think the SDSU kid and he would be a good 1-2 solution for next year - both are pretty athletic and neither is a great thrower. But my guess is Brad & Co. aren't up to the task, even if Kirk & Tim would like to accomplish it. My fear is we put all of next season's eggs in the Hank Brown basket.

I don't think he has enough self-preservation in him to make it through a season, and I fear trying to coach his recklessness out of him will effectively neuter him.

I know AZ is laughing at Doug for suggesting it, but I do think the hits took a toll as the game went on.
Hopefully Brown will be good enough to fill in so Sullivan can play recklessly but effectively and inevitably get hurt.

Lots of mobile quarterbacks somehow also avoid injury. Maybe Sullivan can learn to curb his instinct to hammer someone at the end of his runs while still remaining effective.

It's an annoying team and then you see all the social media from the guys who've dedicated their last five years to this program and it's hard to remain pissed. The defense sucked and so did Phil this year.

Enjoy this feeling while you can even if we suck. If the faggotry is left unchecked, no one will care in the next few years anyways.

Phil is Phil. The players weren't quite at the level we've come to expect.

That’s part of his job too. This year something was different, and worse, with the defense. I’m happy to blame Kirk for that, mostly because people seem to think he’s an offensive coach and have blamed him for all offensive ills for 25 years while giving Norm and Phil complete free passes. So might as well continue that without regard that the defense has been what it is, because Kirk is who he is.

Of course it's part of his job. But a guy like Phil who has coached for so long at such a high level isn’t going to just "regress" (I generally despise that term in the context of sports). The defense wasn't what it has been the past few years but it was still in the top tier of defenses nationally. He just didn't have the caliber of players he's had in the past overall, and no amount of coaching can make up for all of that.

Clearly a talent drop in the defensive backfield, and the Dline was just ok. Think we knew that corner lacked depth, but don’t recall much talk about the safeties being average (at best).

When one unit is consistently in the top 10 percent while the other has been in the 50th percentile in a good year and the bottom 5 percent in a bad year, people are going to focus on the worse unit. It isn't a free pass for Norm and Phil.

This shouldn’t have to be said, plus we had generational talents at LB (Campbell) and DeJean the last 2-3 years. CDJ hid a lot of weaknesses with his play.

That being said, there’s no excuse for a school with Iowa’s level of success, NFL alumni and fan support to trot out such criminally bad offenses. The recruiting/player development issues at the QB and WR position rests solely upon the shoulders of KF.

Their kicker was 22 for 32 on the season but had made a 56 yard FG

Steven’s was 19 for 22 with four 50+ yarders made including the 57 yarder at UCLA, I know the wind played a part but for fucks sake go for it or give him a chance at the 40, either is better over punting when your defense is struggling

Just LoL at turning on the MNF game after to watch nfl kickers miss 50+ yard kicks but there was zero doubt with a 51 and 56 yarder vs Iowa

Leistikow put out a decent article. Sullivan definitely fucked up multiple times in the second half. He also played better than he did vs UCLA.

Looking back at the season it’s pretty difficult to find a game they won with Cade that they would have lost if they’d just played Sullivan from day one. Shit maybe he scrambles for a first down against Iowa State and ices the game. It’s not unreasonable to assume that more game experience would have improved his performance today.

McNamara was really a fucking millstone around the neck of this program for 2 seasons. Ferentz making at clear at the end of the season that he had handed control of the offense completely over to Lester makes me believe Kirk was the deciding factor to start Cade.

My estimation of Kamala as a man has just plummeted.

Iowa approached Texas A&M incompetence in that game, and that's quite an accomplishment.

Get rid of KF if you're really serious about upgrading the program. Under KF Iowa is almost always good, sometimes very good, but rarely great. Iowa State has a pretty good coach. Maybe the Hawks can get him?

I think most of us are okay with this
I don't disagree. Now that the Big Ten has Oregon how realistic is it to expect Iowa to be even in the top 4 of the conference?

But it's time for KF to go. He should have been shown the door last year, imo.

Worry about Texas football, not Iowa. But thanks.

I actually feel pretty good about Sullivan. That might be the Deacon Hill hangover talking, but he has the ability and the fire. Plus seeing a quarterback who can actually move made me somewhat erect.
He has to figure out how to harness and channel that fire somewhat though so he can stay healthy and on the field. He seems to take some wicked shots too often. Needs to realize he is not a fullback.

Should have read Strats post before posting this btw, but yeah he is too reckless and not built to be a running back. Needs to be smarter.

Kirk has prove every year he deserves the right to be the HC. Unfortunately it doesn’t work that way at Iowa, and not just for football.

He also needs to learn to keep his eyes downfield for more than a second. And how to move around in the pocket rather than immediately turn every play into a scramble drill.

The Iowa offense is stale? I think the offense was much improved this year. Lester was a bright spot this past season.
the play calling was better. the concept of what an offense is for is stale

Lester had a couple of duds this year but overall the offense was about a million times easier to watch than in prior years.

Honestly I think the entire coaching staff is fine as a whole. We just need to get better players at certain positions.
