Our defensive front got handled most of the game on passing plays and they picked up damn near every blitz. Their offensive play calling was actually really good other than when they started to turtle up.
Nebrantska legitimately generated more pass rush with 3 guys than Iowa did under any scenario

that was mind blowing given how much Nebrantska fans have bitched about their OLine this year.

They averaged 6 yards a carry without sacks and managed to put themselves into a position to lose to a 3-8 team through a Chinese fire drill of stupidity by about 4 really awful players. That’s a pretty impressive combination of coaching ineptitude, recruiting whiffs and lack of execution.

One positive is that Iowa won't be completely embarrassed next week by tOSU.

Anyone even remotely mad about that game or how it all ended shouldn't be. This was the payment for the sins of Ferentz hubris that needed to happen.

Overall, it sucks that a season that could have been easily a 10 win season was flushed down the toilet for a half dozen stupid reasons, but at the end of the day they finished respectably and it wasn't a disaster.

They finish 7-5. Mediocre, but better than Wisconsin or Minnesota. Better than Nebrantska. Better than Michigan State. The floor at Iowa has been raised.

It didn't have to happen, but it happened. Iowa was due for a season like that. The good thing is that I think it is fixable. If Brian and Copeland are out, they actually get aggressive in the portal and grab a QB, maybe a couple WR and OL, then it could and should be an immediate turnaround.
In addition to Brian and Copeland I nominate Barnett to be added to the chopping block.

Bruce and the offensive line cost Iowa 17 points.
I had hope for Bruce as hopefully a faster version of Tyrone Tracy but he’s arguably a worse player. I can’t tell if they don’t know how to use him or if he’s just unusable. Either way it’s not a great look.

Tyrone at least had one decent season and occasionally scored.

Bruce is too short without the breakaway speed to make up for it at this level

He’s not great, but they have no idea how to use him. He’s be much better running option route out of that shotgun set where he lines up next to Petras with a running back on the other side.

Doug as usual is totally right
  • IF we send some players packing
  • And IF we go after some top notch QBs, OL and WRs from the portal
  • And IF we fire Brian, Copeland and the rest of the offensive staff
  • And IF Kirk stays out of the hiring process for the new staff
  • And IF Kirk doesn’t meddle with the play calling or philosophy of the new staff

Then we will totally turn it all around fairly quickly. We just need to dangle some of our NIL treasure chest in front of some guys and we will be set. We’ve got this!

I’m sure this has been said, but I’m drunk and I DGAF.

Opening Series:

Gavin Williams fields kickoff and gets stuffed at the 14.

1st play: End around to Bruce for no gain.

2nd play: Incomplete pass.

3rd play: Incomplete pass.

4th down: Punt

All against a team that has not been able to stop the run.

Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz shouldn’t just be fired, he should be burned at the stake.

Yes, Iowa has never turned things around after a mediocre year. It's unheard of. It's much more realistic that they will just collapse and have losing seasons.

For the love of fuck, they went 7-5. You act as if they went 2-10 and were blown out by everyone.

You act as if the defense won't be loaded again next year.

You act as if we don't have good TE's and stud RB.

You act as if we don't still have one of the best kickers and punters in the country.

How silly of me.

If I may, I don’t believe @HiG 2.0 is saying the things you are insinuating he is.
He is merely pointing out that you made a list nobody on Earth disagrees with. IF all those things happen of course the offense will get better. They just won’t do all of those things.

Oh, it was so much worse than that....

- Gavin Williams was allowed to even be in that position after seeing the prior 2 games when the other team directly singled him out and kicked at him every single time.

- Not just a jet sweep, but one they have run so many times every team would know it is coming.

- The first incomplete pass was the same fucking pseudo rollout Brian has used on the first series in at least 5 previous games this season.

- The next incompletion was pretty much the LaPorta out play they run also nearly every first series this year.

No, he is flat out mocking the list, not because everyone agrees, but because he thinks Iowa incapable of doing most of it if not all of it. Even though Kirk has done it multiple times previously.

I didn’t mind the jet sweep. Try to catch them stuffing the usual run. The other two passes were September Spence. No fucking chance. Spence sucks. Brian sucks. Repeat.

I would like to hear @Bob Sanders reasoning for thinking someone is stupid for wanting Nwampa over Tommy Soybean at CB.
  • It's a completely different position that he hasn't practiced.
  • He's like 6'3" which is gigantic for a CB and there no indication that he has the short area quickness to play CB.
  • Heinz played okay even when they were targeting him with Palmer who is a stud. Hall was the one giving up the big plays to Palmer.

I do in fact believe Kirk is incapable of doing it at this point in his career. He praised our Oline play after the game for fuck’s sake. He might make some changes, including letting Brian go. He let GDGD go after all. But there’s no way he does more than half of that list. I’m not criticizing our D. Or our TEs. Or our RBs. I’m questioning Kirk’s ability to make REAL changes.

Well, there you go @Kamala .

Lol. Pretty sure this is the same HIG that also thought Iowa wasn't going to win another game after Ohio State.

Brian needs to go. Kirk will never fire Brian. Barta will do nothing.
So we’ll do this again next year.

I think Bruce is fine, but the issue is he shouldn't be your #1 option. He would be fine as a 2nd or 3rd option.

Bruce was absolutely fine as exactly what he was last year. A quick guy you can put in the slot and get him a couple throws per game and is complementary to guys on the outside and the TE's.

He was never supposed to be the #1 receiver and punt returner on a Big Ten team. Ever. He's playing out of position, way too much and on special teams where doesn't belong.

If Kirk had some real balls, he'd hire Paul Chyrst as OC. Of course O-line is the real problem. Iowa hasn't had an O-line that could truly dominate since probably 2009 or 2008.

Not sure why the origin of the fire drill of stupidity matters

Is there a way to flag any usernames who wanted to go for 2 after Iowa’s first TD? I think it would be helpful to know who specifically thought they were going to score 3 TDs and also convert on 3 two-point conversions. (while also knowing it is the year 2022 and Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz is in charge of the offense)

Nwankpa just doesn’t have the short area quickness of…whoever the fuck is #16

I think it’s reasonable to acknowledge that he has better physical traits than Heinz but is still a worse option to put in at CB if he’s gotten zero practice reps there. Hall got roasted because of technique errors, not because he’s a worse athlete than 16. Hall is probably going to be a really good DB here and got exploited today.

I think it’s reasonable to acknowledge that there was one white starting cornerback in college football coming into the year, then there were two because iowa, and there should never, ever be three.

Also, Humboldt.

Right. But we aren’t talking about a starter. They were down to what would have been the 5th CB in October who was a fairly highly regarded true freshman. He was getting exploited so it was apparently either stick with him, go to 16 or put a guy in a spot he’s probably not practiced. In an emergency situation, he went with the guy he thought at least knew the calls and technique. He held up better than Hall, who knows on Nwankpa.

Not even sure if I can adequately explain why, but for some reason I'm strangely happy we lost that game yesterday.

Perhaps I'm just evil

I wanted them to win to win the division, but 7-5 and no division title is going to be more likely to prompt good long-term changes, such as the exit of Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz, then eking out the division and losing in Indy would have.
